At HEIDE soon. An apt pairing of painters.A chance meeting in 1984 between the Italian-based Australian modernist Ken Whisson (1927–2022) and the regional South Australian artist and aspiring amateur ruck- rover ,John Foubister (1954–) led to a lifelong friendship. Conducted by post and over the telephone, the wide-ranging conversations over the subsequent decades unfolded against the backdrop of changing personal circumstances and radically different lives. Presenting artworks by the celebrated modernist and his younger counterpart, this exhibition offers a meditation on exchange, artistic influence and camaraderie.

John Foubister: Moment to Moment

This is an exhibition of recently completed paintings developed mostly through an intuitive process. I continue to make images that attempt to achieve a reconsidered representation of the natural world, which is underpinned by an interest in Animist belief systems. Also to create works that reflect my ongoing interest the limitations of human sensory capabilities, and the process by which my mind arrives at a sense of self, of the world, and of my place in it.

Please join John Foubister, Debbie Pryor and myself as we open our exhibitions at the Hahndorf Academy on Thursday 4 Dec at 6pm. You’ll be treated to some dreamy paintings, luscious ceramics, and some kooky interactive digital works - a bit of something for everyone! Plus, opening remarks by Andrew Purvis from @central.gallery_ . What a night, not to be missed if you’re in SA.

My exhibition, Delicious Paradox, is a series of works all based on the ecological theory of adaptive resilience. The name ‘Delicious Paradox’ (coined by Buzz Holling) describes the delightfully surprising absurdity that the most stable communities are those that are constantly changing and adapting to their situation.

All the works were created using the same principles of adaptation and change. You will be treated to some delightful, surprising and absurd interactive installation, digital prints, stop-motion animation and maybe even walk away with a digital work of your own.

In addition, I will be running a Sidewalk Stop-Motion Studio on the footsteps of the Hahndorf Academy on Saturday 29 Nov from 10am-12pm and on Sunday 30 Nov from 2-4pm. Pop by and help create a collaborative stop-motion work that will be shown as part of this exhibition. While there you can also check out the final days (hours) of shows by @ashermilgate and a collection of works by artists from Irwiri Arts.

Hope to see you there!
