Darkness had fell and Doug carefully drove down an icy West Chewuch road toward Winthrop when he spotted a hiker who appeared to have just emerged from a snowy hike.

Concerned, Doug pulled over and offered the hiker a ride. His name was Seth and the story he told there in the cab of the Bronco was a wild one.

He had been hiking the Pacific Northwest Trail from Oroville toward Ross Lake when snowfall forced him to take refuge in the Tungsten Mine. As his food supply dwindled, he was forced to hike out regardless of how much snow was still falling. It took another 36 hours for him to get down to the Chewuch road where Doug was driving.

Long story short, Seth stayed The weekend with us warming up. We shared soup & fresh baked bread & watched a lot of Ted Lasso. We listening to Seth’s trail tales of the Appalachian Trail and the Continental Divide Trail.

And one thing I won’t forget him telling me about is the definition of a hobo: “. A hobo, unlike a bum or a tramp, is more than willing to work, but mostly for a short duration, as their main impetus is travel, the love of the journey above the actual destination,” which clearly explained the last seven years of hiking he has accomplished.

Thanks for being here @foundationhikes 🥾. Be safe out there.
