Every time I make a yoga reading list I have to do a background check first. That’s just the reality of the yoga world we inherited at the intersection of colonialism, white supremacy, and patriarchy.

Where abuse and cover-up have been protected for decades, often inside the very lineages that gave us the texts we maybe used to love, but can no longer look at 👀

These are some of the books that I assign in my YTT’s, and that shape my understanding of yoga as a practice of liberation from South Asian and Black authors.

People like @acharyashunya @harpindermannyoga @adriennemareebrown @dalitdiva @su9nah @foundspaceyoga and more whose work I trust and whose values and lives I can stand behind. This is what it looks like to take decolonization seriously all the way to your bookshelf.

Part 1: roots, liberation and decolonization.
Share with a yoga studio and yoga lover you know.

Comment “BOOK LIST” and I’ll send it over - hyperlinked and from a shop where you’ll support a Black Owned Bookstore & scholarships in yoga 🔥

Follow @susannabarkataki for more thought provoking yoga content.

Im a former English teacher who loves books and just won a Gold Nautilus Award 2026 for my most recent book. So yeah I definitely want to bring yoga reading back 🎉

If you want to join a yoga & social justice book club and training with me comment “CLUB”

And comment to get this book list.
No email needed just the clickable list.

And yea there’s lots more where this comes from.
Stay tuned for part 2

There’s a difference between teaching yoga, and teaching yoga with roots 🔥

Many yoga teacher trainings will teach you how to sequence a class.
But they won’t teach you why the practice exists. Who it comes from and why, it’s radical engaged history. How to hold it with integrity.

Knowing how to create belonging for the communities most harmed by extractive wellness spaces.
Having language for the hard conversations, like cultural appropriation, erasing gender binaries, decolonizing yoga so you speak up and know what to say.

Understanding the philosophical lineage, not just the poses.
Learning and teaching yoga to meet this world, this moment.

You’ll get award winning training, small caucus group and 1:1 support to become the yoga leader you are meant to be. Community that’s unmatched.

This community is what we build in Embody Yoga’s Roots YTT300.
If you’re ready to advance your practice and lead with integrity comment YTT I’ll send you the details. 🔥🙏🏽

If your heart breaks for the world and you want to do something about it, yoga teaching might be your path♥️

Authentic yoga teacher training is activism, healing, and leadership all in one breath and movement!

It’s easy to look to others leading the way in equity and justice and celebrate them without asking what it means for you to be part of a movement for social change.

But you have a needed part in this!! And there’s SO many ways to lead with yoga and create change 🔥

It can also be easy to feel powerless. But yoga connects us to infinite, ever-replenishing power within a power no one can give and no one can take away. (This is deep and powerful and can be taught)

What action can you take today to affirm your values and be part of the change?
Tell me in the comments 👇🏽
