Every time I make a yoga reading list I have to do a background check first. That’s just the reality of the yoga world we inherited at the intersection of colonialism, white supremacy, and patriarchy.

Where abuse and cover-up have been protected for decades, often inside the very lineages that gave us the texts we maybe used to love, but can no longer look at 👀

These are some of the books that I assign in my YTT’s, and that shape my understanding of yoga as a practice of liberation from South Asian and Black authors.

People like @acharyashunya @harpindermannyoga @adriennemareebrown @dalitdiva @su9nah @foundspaceyoga and more whose work I trust and whose values and lives I can stand behind. This is what it looks like to take decolonization seriously all the way to your bookshelf.

Part 1: roots, liberation and decolonization.
Share with a yoga studio and yoga lover you know.

Comment “BOOK LIST” and I’ll send it over - hyperlinked and from a shop where you’ll support a Black Owned Bookstore & scholarships in yoga 🔥

Follow @susannabarkataki for more thought provoking yoga content.

Im a former English teacher who loves books and just won a Gold Nautilus Award 2026 for my most recent book. So yeah I definitely want to bring yoga reading back 🎉

If you want to join a yoga & social justice book club and training with me comment “CLUB”

And comment to get this book list.
No email needed just the clickable list.

And yea there’s lots more where this comes from.
Stay tuned for part 2

Yoga is liberation and we need to practice its depths now more than ever. For folks of the global majority, BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, and those from marginalized communities: Yoga has always been a tool for survival, reclamation, and healing. This is your space to deepen without apology, honor yoga’s roots, and lead in a way that reflects your truth.

For allies and those with privilege: Yoga calls you to more than personal practice, it calls you to responsibility, integrity, and action. This is a space to unlearn, to listen, and to commit to honoring yoga’s depth in real ways.

My friend Susanna Barkataki is offering a powerful, online yoga training that embodies this purpose. I’ll be teaching a workshop inside Embody Yoga’s Roots YTT 300: Ignite Integrity, Celebrate Diversity, and Embody Yogic Leadership.

This is more than just another training, this is a space where yoga is practiced as a tool for personal and collective change. Get more details and reserve your spot now. Sign up at the link in @susannabarkataki bio. http://www.ignitebewell.com/ytt-300-info #EmbodyYogasRootsYTT by @foundspaceyoga

Are you ready to teach yoga?

If your gut response is, “Maybe…,” or, “I wish…,” then I have another question for you:

Why the hesitation?

Sit with that one for a second. Take a breath.

There are plenty of valid reasons you might not be ready to teach. Teacher training programs, while they can be incredibly rewarding, are a big investment of resources. If it’s not the right time, I get it. But…

If resources aren’t the issue…

If you’re worried that you’re ‘not good enough’ at yoga…

If you’re worried that you don’t know enough…

If you think you need to wait until you have all the answers before sharing this practice…

Pause.

The most impactful teachers I’ve had did not teach by answering questions, but rather by *asking* them. They created opportunities and safe containers for me to take up the questions that sparked my innate curiosity. They offered tools and skills, and they cleared barriers that prevented me from accessing my own inherent wisdom.

The root of the word “educate” is the same as that of the word, “educe,” which means to “bring out or develop something latent or potential.” We are not meant to give our students the knowledge and wisdom we contain within us, but rather to create the conditions within which they can access the knowledge and wisdom *they* already contain.

So, are you ready to teach yoga? What if, instead of worrying about having all the answers, you considered the following questions instead:

Do I have the time, energy, and desire to hold space for others’ learning and exploration?

Am I able to be fully present for another human being and responsive to their needs?

Am I curious enough to wonder and brave enough to do so out loud?

If the answer to these questions is ‘yes,’ you might be ready.

My friend and fellow question-asker, @susannabarkataki, is offering her revolutionary 200-Hour Yoga Teacher Training, beginning in January 2026. This training puts the heart of yoga at the forefront, centering justice and agency. It will leave you with more questions than answers—in other words, ready to teach— and I’m excited to be part of the guest faculty once again.

Yoga is not about mastering a pose. It isn’t about how you look. It’s not about physical ability or achievement. It’s not about following commands in a classroom, nor is it about having all the answers, all the time.

Yoga is about embodying the courage to lead. To adapt. To remove obstacles and barriers to access for those around you. To ask questions. It’s about how you show up in challenging moments, and how you create and support ease.

Are you ready to show up for yourself and those around you, to lead by example, and to integrate the heart of yoga into your body, your actions, and your communities?

My friend @susannabarkataki is offering her revolutionary 300-Hour Yoga Teacher Training this year from June through December. This training puts the heart of yoga, care, community, equity, and justice at the forefront. I will once again be serving on the guest faculty to facilitate conversations and talk about accessibility, disability justice, body liberation, consent and agency, and more.

It’s Trans Day of Remembrance, a day in which we honor the memories of our trans and gnc siblings who have lost their lives due to violence, either at the hands of others or by their own decision. It’s a sobering day that reminds us what we are constantly up against as people whose bodies and souls were not created to assimilate smoothly into the world we have been presented with.

While there is plenty to say, one thing we’ve agreed on as TFC: it’s not a time for hot takes.

We’re not here to tell you:

- how you should or should not respond to the US election
- how you should or should not prepare for 2025
- what you should or should not be doing
- what you are supposed to or not supposed to feel
- who you should or should not be talking to...

We also decided that organizational statements feel inauthentic for us right now. So, instead, we are each offering something small. Take what resonates and leave the rest. We’re just people living and struggling too.

The only thing that really matters for us to say is this:

If you are trans, nonbinary, genderqueer, or anywhere else on the spectrum of gender freedom, we love you, you imperfect being. We will continue to show up. We only hope that you’ll join us.

You can find our love letters to you at the link in our [@transfuturescollective] bio, listed as “TDOR 2024 Shares.”

Love,

Zel, Rebby, Daniel, Puja & M

I was so happy to be back at the Dane County Farmers’ Market this morning that I literally cried. I can’t remember the last time I cried tears of joy. This market is my favorite place in the world.

I’ve been back in the Madison area for a year, but my disability made it impossible to do the amount of walking required to make it to and around the capitol square. Issues with health insurance and a shortage of healthcare providers meant I couldn’t get the routine care or meds needed to manage my AS until late July/August. Even now, two months in, I don’t know if the meds will have a noticeable effect, and reliable, high capacity mobility aids are prohibitively expensive for too many of the people who need them (myself included).

Many, many thanks to my colleague Lori, who spent an hour in unplanned conversation with me about accessibility and community care, our absolutely ruinous healthcare system, and the many shortcomings of the ADA and other disability rights legislation…and then showed up at my office door offering me a donated wheelchair (!!!) that her senior services program didn’t have storage space for!

And, of course, so much loving gratitude to my incredible partner Cyndi Jaye, who let me convince her to get up at 6:30 on a day off and then pushed me (and so many fresh veggies!) ALL THE WAY AROUND THE SQUARE so I could experience my perfect Saturday morning and feel my humanity again.

Enjoy this photo of Cyndi’s lovely smile and giant pickles-on-a-stick!

It features a person seated in a meditative pose by a lake during sunset, conveying a calm and reflective mood. The person is wearing a long-sleeve black top and grey pants, with their eyes closed and hands resting gently on their knees in a classic meditation posture. The background includes serene water and a softly lit sky, enhancing the tranquil setting. Text on the image provides details about the event, including the timing and the name of the speaker, Rebby Kern, with their pronouns (they/them) specified. The logo of the Trans Futures Collective, depicting a crescent moon and leaves, is also visible in the corner.

It features a gray textured background with black text and the event’s logo—a crescent moon encircled by leaves—positioned in the upper right corner. Text reads “Join us for an intimate and empowering workshop within the Trans Futures Collective community, where we will explore the complexities of collective grief and the pathways to healing within our shared experiences as TGNCI+ people. This session provides a supportive space to honor our collective grief and resilience.”

I have big news to share.

After 13+ years away, the last 8 of which I’ve spent in the Washington, DC area, I’ll be moving home to the Madison area at the end of September. It’s bittersweet and only sort of expected. It’s definitely going to be another adventure.

Wisconsin is where I grew up and spent my first 18 years of life. It’s where my family lives (including my new, 1-month-old nibling!), along with half a life’s worth of memories. Having visited, I know it’s changed a lot since I last lived there, and most of the community I once had has moved elsewhere.

So, it’s very much like starting over. And starting over is hard. Change is hard. But I know it can be beautiful too.

Who do I know in the Madison area? Or in the Great Lakes region? What’s going on in the yoga scene? The queer community? The disability justice and fat liberation movements? What do I need to know before I come back? And who wants to be friends? 😅

DC folk, I’ll be in town through September 30th! Send me a message if you want to meet up, or just wish me well on my journey. I’ll miss you. Thank you for the last 8 years. by @foundspaceyoga
