A room full of women came together and had the conversations we don’t have enough at our first Motherhood Works Summit in partnership with Mindplace, @bupa.uk.

The honest conversations, the complicated conversations, the conversations about identity, ambition, confidence, motherhood, loss, growth and everything in between.

There were moments of vulnerability, moments of recognition and moments where heads nodded across the room because someone had finally put words to a feeling so many women had experienced but never spoken out loud.

We heard stories of women who thought motherhood would make them smaller, women who questioned themselves, women who felt lost and women who discovered that motherhood had given them something unexpected: a deeper resilience, a sharper perspective and a clearer understanding of who they are.

We began the day with Mothers in Mind: The Future of Maternal Support at Work, a leadership breakfast in partnership with Mindplace, Bupa UK.

Thank you to every speaker, attendee, partner @bupa.uk and @momcozy.uk and member of our community who helped make Motherhood Works possible.

A few awkward words from me...

There’s a reason I’m far more comfortable behind the camera than in front of it, but I wanted to take a moment to say a huge THANK YOU.

Pense à toutes ces petites choses qu'on te dit de supporter dans ta vie parce que tu es une femme (noire).

Aux règles douloureuses qu'on te dit de supporter. C'est normal, tu es une femme.

Aux tâches ménagères dont tu dois t'occuper. C'est normal, c'est le travail de la femme.

Aux maladresses (ahem, conneries) des hommes qu'il faut tolérer. Les hommes sont comme ça depuis la nuit des temps, c'est aux femmes d'être plus malignes.

Je me souviens d'une amie, mère de deux enfants, femme au foyer, qui s'est plaint auprès de son mari parce qu'elle était épuisée et lui de répondre "celles qui ont 8 enfants là font comment?"

Je me souviens de ma voisine qui s'est fait gronder par les infirmières dans la salle d'accouchement parce qu'elle avait mal. "Tu cries quoi? Tu es une femme hein"

On nous parle de nos grand-mères, de nos mères, de nos soeurs qui ont supporté et continuent de supporter pareil ou pire comme la preuve que nous aussi nous pouvons supporter. On nous vante leurs forces, leur soumission, leur résilience.

Oui, pense à toutes ces souffrances, grandes, petites, subtiles.

Et maintenant, pose-toi la question: au nom de quoi?

Quelle est la récompense au bout du chemin sinon ta santé mentale, l'épuisement de ton corps et le sacrifice de ton bonheur?

C'est le moment de déposer ce fardeau. Tu en as le droit. Si tu te sens épuisée, tu as le droit de déposer ce fardeau.

Si tu peux te débarrasser des tâches ménagères, fais-le. Engage une aide.

Si tu peux embaucher une nounou, fais-le. Même une fois par semaine pour te donner un peu de répit.

Si tes règles te font souffrir, des solutions existent. Consulte un médecin.

Il est temps d'arrêter de normaliser la souffrance comme une preuve de ta force. Tu n'as rien à prouver à personne.

La souffrance n'est ni dans ton ADN, ni dans la couleur de ta peau, ni dans ton second chromosome X.
