In this interview from our Fall 1988 issue, novelist Frederic Tuten discusses the complexities of writing historical characters with appreciation for their proletarian language with the late editor Bruce Wolman. The interview took place on the event of the release of his novel, “Tallien: A Brief Romance” (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1988).

Thank you to all the friends who came out and gave me beds, food, drinks, shoulders to rest on, itinerary advice, cars, rides, patience, support, and many (newly discovered!) electrolytes in between.

It’s not easy to be on tour with a book. It’s a constant hustle. You’re always setting yourself up for disappointment and challenges, with bursts of joy in between.

I’m choosing to show the good, happy memories of the past month, but don’t let social media fool you. It’s also been a cry fest, and always that question lingering: is anyone out there?

I discovered that there are. Many different people, in fact, who still love books and read them. It’s just a different structure now. Writers and readers have become a kind of extended tribe. We rely on individual messages, serendipitous encounters. We keep falling in love with words and stories, even if we’re not always sure which container to rely on anymore.

So we seek each other out, the last dreamers and romantics. It means so much to know we have each other, to hear that voice at the end of a bad day telling you they see you.

I wish Instagram didn’t have to be the way we promote books and ideas, but for now, here we are.

Thank you all for an unforgettable month full of surprises.

It was hard to drive up PCH and see what the fires have left behind. The ocean is polluted. It still smelled like chemical ash when I walked by the debris. Matthew Specktor is so right when he talks about disaster amnesia.

Aqua is a book about Los Angeles and how to keep dreaming in a world that’s crumbling apart. So this quote of his feels fitting:

“People don’t seem to have a problem with a romanticized New York… Los Angeles deserves the same courtesy.”

Let’s keep California romantic.

As a student and then a professor, @frederictuten found a vibrant intellectual world at @ccnycitycollege that was unlike anything he had previously known as a poor kid from the Bronx. The parade of brilliant writers and academics he met and worked with along the way set Frederic on the road to his own intellectual life as a writer and painter.

Hear the story of this Guggenheim Fellow on our most recent episode of CUNY Laureates. (Link in bio)
