There’s a LOT going on in this year’s Short Film Showcase.

We’ve got a worker robot who can’t stay awake on the night shift, created as a student animation project on a $0 budget. A photographer who pulls off a rural road to shoot a timelapse and starts capturing things that really shouldn’t be there. And a man deciding what to do with the sailboat that defined his childhood, filmed in the Bay of Islands with his real family playing themselves.

A Central Otago woolshed story starring Ian Mune and Mark Mitchinson, shot by legendary cinematographer Alun Bollinger - Heavenly Creatures, The Frighteners, The Lord of the Rings - makes its New Zealand premiere at Misty Flicks.

A short featuring Kali Kopae and Maaka Pohatu has already screened at five festivals across three countries. A wartime story about saving a piece of music from the bombing of WWII Germany, created by a VFX crew with Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings credits between them.

We’ve got an extinct New Zealand bird brought back to life through animation by a director raised in Tokoroa. A survivor, an old ham radio and a stranger who knows a little more than he should. And a music video created with real care for Te Awamutu songwriter Mike Conlon, exploring grief and love after the loss of a child.

And the lineup doesn’t shy away from difficult stories either, with an M-rated political drama about a woman uncovering her father’s role in extrajudicial killings.

Different filmmakers. Different stories. And very different films.

Screening on opening night, 6 November at the Regent Theatre, Te Awamutu.

Come and see them on the big screen.

I was not expecting Wellington to show up like this.

About 30 people packed into Schrödinger’s Books for the fourth stop on my Mental Health Sounds Like This New Zealand book tour — many of whom had never heard of me before.

They weren’t there because they knew me.
They were there because they were curious about music and mental health.

From what I gathered: About 30% were musicians.
About 60% were therapists, educators, or working in mental health.

Which made for some pretty incredible conversations.

I started with my pepeha, shared my story, played a couple of songs (Together We Rise and I Am), and then we did something that has become one of my favorite parts of this tour:

We wrote a song together.
A room full of strangers…
Writing about self-worth and belief.

And by the end of the night, we weren’t strangers anymore.

Grateful doesn’t quite cover it.

Wellington — thank you.

PS if you missed it, or want to grab a copy of the book: @petonebooks OFFICIALLY stocks Mental Health Sounds Like This - for a limited time only!!
