Skyler was a dear friend and a brilliant soul who inspired me in countless ways. When he commented that he wanted someone to come visit him in Seattle, I made a trip to visit him. When he opened up about his health challenges, I wanted to be there for him. It’s truly an honor to hold space for someone who so often held space for me. I hope you’ll join us in remembering and celebrating him.

It’s the 4th day of Kwanzaa Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics and Responsibility)

The KCAs mission is rooted in Cooperative Economics and we foster a deep responsibility to the Austin community and beyond.

This year we had the amazing opportunity to connect the 100+ to our amazing sister @freedomsonlight who sold her products for the first time here at R(Oil) Tea Party and sold out.

Hey guys! Chisama Ku here from CSAW. I, along with Sierra Nicholls (founder), make up the entire CSAW team. I want to come on today to share a little bit about my time at #EdCon2022 hosted by @americancircuseducators this past October!
.
.
Part of the money raised in our most recent fundraiser was to support my attendance at #EdCon2022 back in October. As someone who is still very new to the circus community (I come from a pole dance background starting from a boutique studio in Miami), it was extremely insightful to be part of something that I would have never considered being part of 6 years ago when I took my first pole class.
.
.
The conference was a packed three days of a variety of hands-on workshops, chats, panels and informational classes. As someone who is mostly a performer, I didn’t think the workshops and events directed towards circus education would apply to me, however I was soon proved wrong.
.
.
One of my favorite workshops was “Shapecraft” presented by Jenn Bruyer @heelhang_witchcraft because it gave me new tools and perspectives that I can apply to my performance, and in turn to students if I ever decide to teach. This workshop, along with many others showed me the various ways I could incorporate what I learned into my practice.
.
.
Unfortunately, as many organizations and individuals are already aware, the lack of representation of people of color is often a common reality seen throughout the various cultures and subcultures of our society. The attendance at #EdCon was nothing different.
.
.
In @americancircuseducators and @americancircusalliance 2022 Circus Census Report, it is revealed that the student and staff makeup of U.S. circus organizations is predominantly white and female. This statistic was overly evident at #EdCon this year. (Continued in comments)
