Remembering Prof Saibaba: 2nd Martyrdom Anniversary
India Labour Solidarity held an all-day event at Pelican House, London, to mark two years since Prof GN Saibaba's martyrdom, and to raise awareness of political prisoners and the people's struggles they were part of, in India and the UK.
For the opening session, Vasantha Kumari, activist and Prof Saibaba's wife, joined online, with speakers from ILS, India Workers Association GB, @youngstrugglelondon Yound Struggle and ILPS @ilps_official in the room to remember Saibaba’s long journey: from humble beginnings and overcoming disability with his family's support especially his mother, to shaping India’s political movements at the national and international levels, and standing with Adivasis against imperialist displacement, in defence of Jal, Jangal, Zameen. Speakers shared personal memories and how he inspired them and their organisational works.
Continuing Saibaba’s legacy means joining our struggles into a broad international front against oppression, and standing with political prisoners, some of them his own comrades.
There were three other sessions focused on political prisoners
1) A Conspiracy of Conspiracies: How the colonial machinery that led to Shaheed Bhagat Singh's martyrdom is still used to jail dissenters on alleged conspiracies, with a focus on Surendra Gadling, the people’s advocate, imprisoned for his untiring legal support for the Adivasi undertrial prisoners and political prisoners including Prof Saibaba
2)	Q&A with Umar Khalid's family - Dr SQR Ilyas and Kulsum Syeda spoke to @abhibhosalej Bhosale, president, SOAS Ambedkar Society, about the Delhi "Larger Conspiracy" case, under which Umar and Sharjeel Imam have been held for over five years. The room cheered as Umar was congratulated on winning the Front Line Defenders Award 2026 (Asia Pacific). Kulsum recalled Umar’s friendship with Prof Saibaba fondly and that the shared politics of standing with the oppressed and Adivasis that made both targets of the state.
