One of my greatest joys is getting to live life in the weeds with @samtorresnoise We’ve spent the last few days at @studio9porches learning the space and its amazing technical, spatial capabilities. When there are so many possibilities, it starts to force the question, “why”. What decisions serve the music and the experience as a whole, and what ends up being a distraction? Or a gimmick? It’s been fun exploring that question a bit this week, and we’re excited to share! Thank you @digifiddler for inviting us and @freshgrassfoundation for the support and time/space. Music at 7pm tonight (Saturday) at @studio9porches 💫💫💫

Sophia Vastek (@sophiavastek ) and Sam Torres (@samtorresnoise ) moved into Studio 9 and the porches on Wednesday morning for their Freshgrass Residency. Since then, they’ve been creating, playin#freshgrassinstitute #spatialaudio #g, and working together to build a new sound world for Sophia’s music, centering on her new record, Alight. SpaceMap Go, the software you see on screen, allows instantaneous placement and movement of sound in and through space, and in fact, we welcomed its creator, @steve.ellison3 only two weeks ago. It seems like every artist who visits us has @eventideaudio at the center of their rig, and that is the lovely glow and shimmer that you hear. Sam Torres, sound designer, live audio engineer, and composer in his own right, took command of our @meyersound SpaceMap system for the very first time with ease and grace, and Sophia’s keyboards and compositions quickly reached into the 3D realm. Join us to hear it live Saturday night! Studio 9 231 River Street North Adams, MA 7pm $25 at the door @freshgrassfoundation @studio9porches

Friday, October 30th at 7pm Tickets expected to sell out!🎟️ Take a step into the old, weird America the night before Halloween. Curated and hosted by Emmy Award-winning archival producer Rich Remsberg and Williams College film history professor Shawn Rosenheim, this haunting collection of forgotten films reveals the strange underbelly of American culture, hear and see: Declassified military training • Vintage hygiene guides • Industrial animations • Lost children’s TV • Religious propaganda • NASA experiments • Amateur disco exhibitions “These films weren’t meant to last. They weren’t even meant to be considered films.” Rescued from government archives, flea markets, and forgotten basements, these ephemeral fragments form an unintentional time capsule—some hilarious, some disturbing, all unexpectedly beautiful. Rich Remsberg is an Emmy Award-winning and Oscar-nominated archival producer, consulting with such directors as Ron Howard, Ben Stiller, and Lawrence Kasdan for documentary films on Netflix, HBO, Disney+, and PBS. The Human Machine’s films are the fruits of Remsberg’s 25 years of combing through rare and obscure footage. Shawn Rosenheim teaches film, nonfiction audio, and literature at Williams College, where he co-founded the Documentary Today conference. He has consulted on Errol Morris’ documentaries, and his work includes interviews at MASS MoCA and Williams College with Werner Herzog, Ken Burns, and Frederick Wiseman, among others. He is the director of Biosphere 2.

I’m thrilled to be spending a few days this week in residency at @studio9porches in North Adams, MA alongside @samtorresnoise ! Sam and I will be spending our time there getting to know the @meyersoundlabs Spacemap spatial sound technology and will design an immersive show specifically for this system. Piano, everywhere! Sam and I have been collaborating for years now in developing my live sound. He is 100% the secret sauce. Sam mixes all my shows: he’s constantly tweaking things and making creative decisions about how we convey my music to audiences. He’s very much responsible for the feel of my live performances. This residency will highlight his incredible artistry as an engineer! If you’re in the area, we hope you’ll join us for this one-of-a-kind performance on Saturday, Oct. 17 ✨

Saturday, October 17 at 7pm Artist-in-Residence Concert: @sophiavastek Troy, New York based pianist and composer Sova (Sophia Vastek) has quietly established herself as an "exciting and refreshingly unpredictable" (PopMatters) artist. Born on an Air Force Base just outside Washington, DC to two professional pianists, Sova defied their hopes of her finding a different calling and began playing the piano as soon as she could sit upright. Since then, her intuitive playing style has evolved into a "deeply immersive and cinematic experience" (Expansion Radial) that blends neoclassical, ambient, and jazz sensibilities. Sova delights audiences with the added mystique of touring with her own upright piano, bringing piano music into unexpected settings. Her newest LP, Alight!, is out now on Hout Records (NPR’s Best Albums, Qobuz Editor’s Pick). It has been described as a “study of contrasts, anchored by Sova’s exquisite keys" (A Closer Listen) and "a mesmerizing fusion of neoclassical composition and indie electronic sound design” (Last Day Deaf). The record marks an exciting evolution of her language, involving collaborators Clarice Jensen, Spencer Zahn, Max Yassky, Sam Torres, and Evan Chapman. In a live setting, with her piano in tow, Sova is equally at home in a state-of-the-art performing arts center as she is in DIY venues or on a classical chamber music series. In that vein, she recently opened for Icelandic pop experimentalists múm. At the heart of her live sound is a long-standing collaboration with audio engineer Sam Torres who travels with Sova and provides the detailed sonic thread that links her performances.

November 6 at Studio 9! Tickets on Sale Now🎟️ Cloudbelly is a Western Massachusetts-based indie-folk band known for their emotionally charged songwriting and expansive, genre-blurring sound. Centered around Corey Laitman’s poetic lyrics and haunting vocals, the band draws from alt-folk, art-rock, and ambient textures to create music that feels nostalgic, cinematic, and raw. Their 2024 album i know i know i know earned national acclaim—named one of the Top Albums of the Year by The Boston Globe and nominated for Album of the Year at the Boston Music Awards. With a lineup featuring guitarist Sam Perry, drummer/producer Nate Mondschein, and guitarist/vocalist Ciarra Fragale, Cloudbelly delivers live performances that are both emotionally immersive and disarmingly playful. Their next album, due in 2026, marks a bold new chapter in their evolving sound. @cloudbellytheband @ciarra.mp3 Ciarra Fragale Ranging from heartbreak pop to cinematic indie rock, Ciarra Fragale’s music has been described as “atmospheric and aspirational, precisely the sort of emotive sensibility we are collectively yearning for.” Known for her soaring vocals and live looping arrangements, the Hudson Valley-native and Western MA-based musician often draws comparisons to artists like Beach Fossils, Kate Bush, and The Japanese House. In 2025, Ciarra released her 4th studio album Get What You Want (produced by Eric Slick of Dr. Dog). This fall will mark the release of her first ambient guitar exploration, Digital Bath. Ciarra also plays in regionally-renowned band Cloudbelly, as well as other projects.

🫧 MEMPHO ARTIST SPOTLIGHT ~ SIERRA HULL 🫧 Virtuoso mandolinist, six-time Grammy-nominated artist, groundbreaking songwriter & one of bluegrass & Americana’s most dynamic voices @sierradawnhull is headed to Memphis for @memphofest ! A pioneer in acoustic music, Hull has performed on iconic stages like Carnegie Hall, the Grand Ole Opry, the White House and she can now add @radiansamp at @memphisbotanic to that list! Don’t miss her set on Sunday 10/11 at 3:15 on the Garden Stage. Recognized for her acclaimed albums “A Tip Toe High Wire” (2025), “25 Trips” (2020) and “Weighted Mind” (2016), she’s also a 7-time IBMA Mandolin Player of the Year - the first woman to ever receive this honor. Hailing from Byrdstown, Tennessee, Hull’s innovative sound is deeply rooted in bluegrass yet continually pushes boundaries. And always up for a musical challenge, when the FreshGrass Institute commissioned her to write a “bluegrass concerto” ahead of their 2023 event, she didn’t hesitate for a reason to add “composer” to her multi-hyphenate title. She penned a three-movement piece, combining through-composed ideas & arranged parts, while also leaving room for improvisational magic, a key ingredient to any bluegrass instrumental. Hull & her world-class band—Avery Merritt, Erik Coveney, Mark Raudabaugh, & Shaun Richardson—initially entered the studio to record "The Movements" right after performing the collection at @freshgrassfoundation for the first time, but a busy tour schedule & finishing up “A Tip Toe High Wire” put the three new pieces on the back burner. But thankfully, only for a short while! In April 2026, she & @merrittfiddle, @erikcove, @raudabaugh1 & @shaunrichardson released a crisp studio recording of her bluegrass concerto simply dubbed “The Movements”. Sierra is the first female artist with a Gibson signature mandolin & a Tennessee Governor’s Distinguished Arts Award recipient!
