Harrow & Hope Brut Reserve No9 NV
•
Sparkling No2 is the first English fizz to grace Ever So Grapeful and I AM truly grateful for having tasted this absolute gem of a wine. English sparkling, as an industry, has blossomed in the last few decades and the folks at Harrow and Hope are part of that changing tide. With skills collected over time, from places near and far, they are focused on crafting exceptional wine. They tend their vines with organic fare and with care, they harvest by hand, fermentations are organised into smaller volumes held in steel or oak. You can taste their enthusiasm and expertise in every sip.

Great brioche-y goodness, it is magnificent! The bouquet erupts, treating your nose to a continental breakfast of custard and vanilla, baked apple and shortcrust pastry, toast and membrillo, dried apricot and almond tart. The lees influence is on parade. Sip through the elegant mousse, pause to ponder the fine bubbles and creamy texture - your palate is rewarded. Ripeness extends to peach, yellow apple and apricot - citric contrast comes as lemon, zest and grapefruit. Complexity is elevated by shavings of apple and almond skin. High acidity has granted the wine longevity and the development of tertiary notes: honey, dried apple and fresh almond. The medium alcohol is seamless and, along with the oak and spent lees, bolsters the medium (+) body. Each drop offers pronounced intensity, elaborated upon through multi-faceted depth over the long finish.

Thymiopoulos Naoussa Xinomavro 2021
•
With a name that references its rich colour and acid profile - Xinomavro is the Greek grape producing age-worthy wines. Though grown across mainland Greece, Naoussa PDO in the north, is home to most varietal styles. Along with considerable acidity, Xinomavro can be quite tannic: this combination of features fosters graceful maturation. To temper its robust profile, Xinomavro is sometimes blended - regional PGI wines see it paired with global varieties (ie. French things like Merlot) - Rapsani PDO and Goumenissa PDO blend with indigenous grapes. Oak aging can also help to soften the wines, however, purists favour walnut for its more neutral flavour profile. Xinamavro generally has a mixed, red and black fruit, profile along with a trademark note - tomato vine.

The nose opens with a delightful bouquet of ripe fruit, from strawberry to blackcurrant - medium (+) intensity. A savoury undercurrent of the variety’s trademark tomato vine, joined by soft graphite, hints at the depth to come. The hue is medium ruby and the texture, multidimensional. Sourdough bread tannins are medium (+), providing a slightly rustic, yet fluffy and flexible feel. Acidity is high and the fruit, expansive - notes of raspberry and cherry, blackberry and plum flesh out the mid palate. The complexity deepens with each glass, unveiling black olive, vanilla, smoke and cedar. Medium’s for alcohol and body. Gifts of time? Hints of prune and dried cranberry. With medium (+) flavour intensity, there is more development to come - all to be enjoyed on the medium (+) finish.

Les Dauphins Côtes du Rhône Reserve Blanc 2024
•
It’s no secret that I love aromatic wines - “Give more floral notes and I will be happy” - said me, right now and previously, in less exact words. The Rhône whites are excellent examples due to their versatility. Combine flower aromas, great weight, plus the freshness that some of them possess and you have wines that smell like spring, drink well in summer with a good chill, and pair beautifully with the heartier foods that we turn to in the cooler months.
In today’s wine we have a drop of the heavier Rhône twin, Marsanne, a good measure of Viognier, of Condrieu fame and my favourite white grape, and half the bottle is Grenache blanc.

Côtes du Rhône AOC
50% Grenache Blanc + 40% Viognier + 10% Marsanne
Maturation - 4 months

The aromas show ripe stone fruit wearing a sweet, yet elegant perfume of honeysuckle and orange blossom. Apple provides a bright, malic acid tang, partly aided by a hit of citrus - the softer sort - tangerine. Floral and peachy is the main impression here and carrying those flavours is a delightful viscosity in the texture of the wine. It’s smooth, dense and slightly oily but not overly heavy. A hint of residual sugar takes your tastebuds through a journey: not bone-dry, not off-dry, just dry but not too dry. Drop a comment if you’ve read “dry” too many times. The core of this blend is ripe pear (very autumnal), nectarine and apricot (more summery), and we even get a tiny bit of winter in the form of baking spice, clove, plus the delicate all-season vanilla.
Structurally, mostly mediums across the board, bar body which got a medium (+). A decent drop that I’d happily drink again. It went very well with a turkey mice lasagne.
