Exactly one year ago we danced with our friends and teachers from El Funoun in an experience that really changed my life. Dabke became a source of excitement, fun, and most importantly - a channel to connect with something that was stolen from me: my grandmother’s home of Palestine 🇵🇸

2 years ago, I didn’t know any Dabke. Zero.
1 year ago, I knew just enough to try, but I couldn’t keep up.
Now, I feel so honored to have learned enough to have fun and move with the music.
I am so excited to learn more and more and more.
Inshallah one day I can be a great Dabke dancer and stomp around on the earth of Palestine 🌱🌿

Thank you to @drmaha_b , @fatemah_musa_bahhour , and @ghadarafeedie at @sawasocal for creating a community that fostered this connection.

Thank you to @noora.baker for introducing me to this art form 2 years ago and being so kind.

Thank you to my mentor and uncle @saad_composer for inviting me to the performances of Ya Saheb Al Tair that impacted my perception of culture, art, and identity.

Thank you to @majdikar for taking my hand and pulling me in when I felt I didn’t belong.

Thank you to @samerkaraja for being responsible for like 80% of my Dabke education 😂

Thank you to Nidal, @reemjoudeh22 , @el_fallahh , @nader._hc , and @jojoo_faqes for being such a joy both as instructors and as people.

Thank you to @simplysuzanhamideh , @akramfrompalestine , @houseofpalestine , and @zaytounadabke_ for hosting us in your city.

Thank you to Rana who patiently taught me the basics from the ground up when I was falling behind.

And thank you to @brooklynkleckley , who brought me— a Palestinian— into the community that I had been searching for for so long. And always practicing with my crazy ass.

I feel profoundly blessed to be on this journey, this adventure.

So much love,
Zayna
