Within the 2026 Prix du design de l’Institut du monde arabe, Minara: Pillars of Light became part of a wider conversation around how contemporary design can engage with culture.

Across the exhibition, different practices approached questions of memory, material, identity and transmission in distinct ways. Minara enters this conversation through research, architecture and light.

Placed within the exhibition, Minara speaks to a question shared by many of the works around it: how can cultural knowledge continue to evolve through contemporary forms while remaining connected to its source?

For Minara, that continuity happens through translation rather than reproduction, carrying architectural memory forward into a new material and spatial language.

Presented as a finalist for the 2026 Prix du design de l’IMA - Emerging Talent.

Lab". وتُجسّد الأعمال الناتجة عن هذه التجربة استكشافاً للمواد وابتكاراً في التصميم.

Works produced through the Ideas FROMM. Industry Residency by Liwan members will be showcased as part of the Bu’ed Nadhar exhibition at Liwan.

The residency explored Doha’s Industrial Area as a site of production, materiality, and urban narrative. Working with local production facilities and four key materials, designers developed and prototyped their ideas under the mentorship of FROMM. Lab. The resulting works reflect material exploration and design innovation.

Residency lead: @fromm.lab
Participating designers included Asma Shalkame, Abdulla Al Obaidly and Noora Al Henzab

Seeing Minara become part of this collective exhibition at the Institut du monde arabe felt particularly meaningful, placing the project within a broader conversation around how contemporary design can engage with heritage, transform it and allow it to continue evolving.

The 2026 Prix du design de l’@institutdumondearabe brought together a wide range of contemporary practices from across the Arab world, creating a space where objects, materials, heritage and new design languages could meet.

Within this setting, Minara: Pillars of Light was presented as a finalist for the Emerging Talent Prize. The project explores architecture through light, translating the rhythm of the ablaq column, repetition and material memory into a modular luminous structure.

Thank you to the Institut du monde arabe, the curatorial and exhibition teams, the jury, and everyone who contributed to bringing this edition together.

Some moments mark a shift.

Being surrounded by designers, thinkers, friends, collaborators and people whose paths have crossed mine in different ways, made these past weeks feel particularly significant.

I’m deeply grateful for @fromm.lab who made all of this possible, and to the @institutdumondearabe and the entire Prix du design de l’IMA team for creating a platform where contemporary design from the Arab world can be seen, discussed and given space to evolve.

Thank you to the jury and to everyone who came to the exhibition, attended the ceremony, shared a conversation, or simply took the time to encounter the work. And beyond the project itself, this moment also closes one chapter and opens another.

BASTION Side Table in the making: each green triangle is individually set by hand into the veneered surface, slowly bringing the pattern to life.

BASTION Side Table in the making.

The veneered surface is precisely laser-cut before each opening is filled by hand with green triangular inlays — a geometric motif inspired by traditional Arabic mashrabiya patterns.
