$The 2026 Majlis Travelling Fellowship exhibition at Fiona and Sydney Myer Gallery brings together the work of 18 third-year VCA students, transforming the gallery into a restless landscape. The diversity is immediate, but the exhibition becomes particularly compelling through the unexpected conversations created between them. Sound is sometimes identifiable and sometimes impossible to locate, creating connections between works that might otherwise appear entirely separate. In Bonnie Thorn’s ‘and I’ll lead you all, wherever you may be’, two wooden bird boxes with speakers concealed inside produce the soft combination of birdsong, water and humming voices. Below, a screen presents intimate footage of grass and the details of a dead bird’s wing. The bird boxes suggest shelter, nesting and care, while the dead bird introduces absence and mortality. Kendrick Yi Guo Goy’s ‘An offering’ combines tree forms and fungi or geological growths made of concave metal, capable of collecting water or holding something sacred. An offering implies an action of giving, remembrance and relationship. Grounded in the artist’s research into Khmer spirit traditions and rituals that carry memory through sound, the sculpture reads as contemporary object and vessel for cultural memory. In Alia Ferdowsian’s ‘Slow cook’, three functioning ovens contain books associated with the accumulation and preservation of knowledge — placed inside machines designed to transform through heat, while fragile organic matter sits alongside them. Casper Plum’s ‘The Friction’ presents a bronze figure in a glass vessel containing beer and urine, resting on denim, while Ben Davis’ divided Woolworths trolley is split into two halves and positioned facing one another in the corner, the trolley becomes strangely unknown. Familiar materials repeatedly become unfamiliar. Bed sheets become suspended structures, garden materials become sculptural forms, objects become fractured monuments, domestic appliances become vessels for transformation, and sound becomes a material that occupies the space alongside the physical works. @vca_art @fsmyergallery #luminosa #luminosaartsscene #vcaart #fsmyergallery$
