Self-Talk, a poem by Nnamdi Agude
Identify the 3 C’s to transform your internal dialogue 🔋

Listen

I think me and you could be good friends.

All this back-and-forth,
I love you. I hate you, to what end?

I lay out my endearing feelings for you
Just to never press send.

Being kind to others comes easy
But to you,why bother?

Minimizing your accomplishments,
until they’re smaller and smaller.

Subconsciously I’m critical
Vocally I belittle.

Hurt people hurt people
& I’m Malcolm in the middle.

Healing takes time & is intentional.

The words you use are the words that bruise.

CATCH what you’re saying.📍
CHECK it. ✅
& then CHANGE it. 📌

These three C’s can transform your Self-talk.

Confidence begins with what you continually tell yourself.

Real talk…

Optimal Level of Arousal: Finding Your Peak Performance

Peak performance isn’t about being too calm or overly fired up > it’s about finding the sweet spot.

The Inverted U Theory shows that performance improves as arousal increases up to a point.
Too little arousal = low focus and motivation.
Too much arousal = tension, rushed decisions, and mistakes.

The key is learning your optimal level of arousal is where confidence, focus, and execution come together.

When you understand how to regulate your energy and emotions, you don’t just perform better, but you perform on purpose.

📅 Book today at fdmentals.org and start discovering your optimal zone so you can take the next step toward becoming a stronger, more consistent version of yourself.

1. Reaction Time
Good sleep hygiene improves neural processing speed, allowing athletes to react faster and more accurately. Poor sleep slows response time, increasing mistakes and injury risk.

2. Emotional Regulation
Consistent, quality sleep helps athletes manage emotions such as frustration, anxiety, and anger. Sleep deprivation lowers emotional control, making athletes more reactive under pressure.

3. Mental and Physical Recovery
Sleep is essential for brain recovery, hormone regulation, and muscle repair. Proper sleep hygiene supports both physical restoration and mental freshness for training and competition.

4. Decision Making
Well-rested athletes process information more efficiently and make better tactical choices. Lack of sleep impairs judgment, situational awareness, and impulse control.

5. Mental Resilience
Adequate sleep strengthens an athlete’s ability to cope with adversity, sustain motivation, and stay mentally tough during prolonged stress or fatigue.

The Trust Triangle is essential because athletes perform best when they trust their coach’s authenticity, clarity, and genuine care. When players feel understood and believe in the coach’s logic, they’re more willing to buy into game plans and push through adversity. Strong trust creates a resilient team culture where communication, confidence, and commitment thrive.

Motivation Monday ⚽️🧠

Charlie soaks up coaching like a sponge. I’ve seen so much growth in him since we first started. He came in lacking confidence, mostly from playing up a year with older, bigger kids. Now, he really understands the concept of controlling the controllables and consistently uses sport psych tools like intentional breathing and power phrases to strengthen his self-talk / confidence. I also want to highlight that Charlie is a great chess player, which helps him think independently and embrace the changing roles his coach asks of him. ♟️

We thank Charlie for allowing us be part of his journey and can’t wait to see him continue to develop with @sportingcaliforniacorona

Soooo… I went undercover 🥷 as a Mental Performance Coach at my first-ever chess tournament last night ♟️

Using Sport Psychology tools in a whole new arena… and the results were 👀

These are my top 3 mental tools I used to prep for the tourney! 💪🏾 🧠

• Intentional Breathing – to stay calm under pressure
• Positive Self-Talk – to build inner confidence each round and to bounce back after mistakes
• Visualization – to mentally rehearse success before the match

The same ones I trust with all my athletes and performers alike.

Check out the video and see how well Coach Nam did 💥

Topic: Non- Negotiables 🚫🙅🏾‍♂️🙂‍↔️

Just like deadlines in school or boundaries in relationships, your passion deserves non-negotiables too. Set the standards you won’t compromise on, & when distractions or excuses show up… “Just Say No.” Because your goals deserve your full respect, and your future requires discipline, not negotiation. 🔑

💡What are your non-negotiables in your career or passion?

Be loud and clear without saying a word. 🫡🤐

When communicating in person, body language has the biggest impact. Facial expressions, gestures, posture, and eye contact.. these non-verbal cues SPEAK volumes and play a major role in how your message is received. 🙇🏾‍♂️

Body language – 55%
Tone – 38%
Words – 7%

My challenge 🚨: To all athletes, students, and professionals out there is to harness the power of body language so you can be a more impactful communicator of focus and confidence!… Whether you’re on the field, in the classroom, or in the conference room. 🤠

Be intentional. Be confident. Be seen.

Internal vs. External Dialogue
Internal dialogue is what you say to yourself — the voice in your head that drives your actions.
It’s your why, your self-belief, your mindset in tough moments.

What do you say to yourself when:

You don’t feel like going to the gym?

You’ve made mistake after mistake in a game?

You’re stuck in your own head and need to lock back in?

Because the truth is — you will mess up. That’s part of it. But what defines you is how you bounce back.
Your internal dialogue is the key to your reset. It’s how you remind yourself: “I’ve been here before. I’m built for this. Let’s go again.”

External dialogue is what everyone else says about you — the noise.
The praise. The criticism. The doubt. The hype.

You can’t control it — but you can use it.
Let it fuel your focus, not shake your foundation.

Athlete Mindset Example:
Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant didn’t just thrive under pressure they wanted to be doubted.
They loved being down, called out, underestimated… because it unlocked something deeper.
Not just physical dominance but mental dominance.
Let it be known: when you're on the field, the court, the training ground even when you're low the moment your mindset locks in, it's a wrap.

One shift in mindset... and the whole game changes.

Mental Flight Check-In ✈️

Mitchell Agude EDGE rusher for the Detriot Lions had a mental performance session with me during his off-season. He is in the 3rd year of his NFL career & 3rd year with the Detroit Lions. In our session, Mitchell reflected on his previous season, which helped him build a honest and intentional mindset for his current off-season grind. That reflection laid the foundation for his power word (Super Saiyan Mode ⚡️) FINISH. @officialagude is committed to FINISHING everything he sets his sights on, On & Off the field!

This led to the next part of our session. Clearing the runway before lift off. Proud brother here letting y’all know.. Year 3 is loading, and Agude Airlines is ready to Take Off on em’ !

Objective – Everyone has a dream or destination they’re trying to reach. Realize that your mind, like a runway, must be clear before you can truly take off. Distractions, fear, and negativity are what keep you grounded. 🗞️

Activity – Runway Exercise: Visualize yourself as a pilot preparing for takeoff toward your goal. Reflect and vocalize what’s in your way, and what needs to be cleared. 💭

Tool – Mental decluttering. Visualization. Journaling. Setting boundaries to clear space in your mind for focus and purpose. 🧰

Truth – Even the strongest jet can’t take off with a cluttered runway. Clear the path, lock in your destination, create your own momentum with productive / healthy habits and finally take off with confidence & watch yourself soar 🔑
