Ahead of this Autumn equinox, I’m taking stock of all the things I am grateful for over this past season. Yes, summer absolutely gutted me physically (thanks crohns flare) and emotionally (everything else). But there were things — !people! — who continued to show up for me. They brought support in the forms of art, inspiration, distraction, anger, deep belly laughs, ugly crying sessions, rides to the hospital, childlike wonder, country-spanning connections, baby snuggles, ridiculous silliness, magic, and remembrance. You were all the beauty of this summer. Thank you thank you thank you 🌅💗

june dump,,, this month was weird but in it i also read some of the best books i’ve read in a while, so cheers to that 🥂

a character from a book: i had no idea who to put for this so naturally i took an online quiz. my result was florentino ariza from love on the time of cholera by gabriel garcia marquez “You are a true romantic, a vivid daydreamer, and a loyal friend. Finished: The Doloriad by Missouri Williams.

Gave 5 Stars: I have yet to give a book five stars this year! My last five star read was Happy Hour by Marlowe Granados.

Gave 2 Stars or Less: The Doloriad by Missouri Williams.

Didn’t Finish: Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert. I’ll definitely pick it up again at a later time.

i relished a bit too much in my spring break and now i feel like i’ve been stumped, bombarded by all of the work that was waiting for me 🥲 nevertheless we persist and i just called that number (last slide) for encouragement and i almost started sobbing 🥺

📖 A book I pinky promise to read
Bunny by Mona Awad. I’ve seen a lot of mixed reviews of this book over here on bookstagram, but I’d love to see what it’s all about for myself. I’ll get to it at some point!!

💍 A book character I would marry
Is Michaela Coel considered a book character? I mean…probably not, but I love her. I loved her in I May Destroy You (not a book), but can we pls give it up for Misfits!!! Her personal manifesto is *chefs kiss*.

👎🏻 A book that I did not like that much
Little Weirds (I’m sorry @verynicebook!!) I wanted to love it so much, but it was just meh for me. I listened to it because Jenny Slate’s voice 🤌🏻 but I think I’ll have to revisit it at some point because I feel like I missed the mark??

💌 A book I would recommend
Calypso by David Sedaris. This was my first Sedaris and It was laugh out loud funny. I couldn’t put this book down. The Fitbit essay will forever be on my mind.

👍🏻 A book I would give a thumbs up
Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner. This book had me in my feels 4 real. I cried a couple times (and I didn’t cry while reading A Little Life?? Michelle Zauner, y do u do this 2 me??). It was so honest and poetic and just a delicious little collection that tugs on all the heartstrings.

“A perfect long read and honestly already shaping to be my all time favorite book. BLACK CAKE by @charmspen1 makes this Caribbean-American girl nostalgic for a home she so badly wants to claim as hers. It brings back memories of times I spent in Jamaica as a kid, and the homecoming that I was able to endure last summer.

The world building of the island through the eyes of the characters, not only makes you invested but it opens up your own scars, your own secrets in a way that makes you feel like you are on this journey with them. I’m not even halfway through the book and I’m eager to know what’s going to happen next. I am happy I grabbed it for the long weekend. And can’t wait to share more thoughts on the book later. Has anyone read it yet? Also shout-out to the @literaryleague for another great recommendation.”
