CAPE TOWN STOOD TOGETHER. 🖤💜

Hundreds of people gathered along the Sea Point Promenade on Sunday in a powerful show of solidarity following the devastating murders of women in Gauteng’s East Rand.

Organised by Gabriella van Wyk in collaboration with SAWFB (SA Women Fight Back), the march brought people together to stand against gender-based violence and femicide. Cape Flats Stories were also present in support of the march.

Beginning at the Lighthouse and ending at Queens Beach, the march was a united call for justice, safer communities and an end to the killing of women.

The march also coincided with the funeral of Kempton Park runner and mother Elizabeth “Tsontso” Moselekgomo, whose death has left yet another family and community grieving.

This is bigger than one city.
This is bigger than one community.
Women everywhere deserve to be safe.

🖤 ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.
💜 END GBV. END FEMICIDE.

Hundreds took to the Sea Point Promenade on Sunday in a powerful show of solidarity after the murders of at least nine women on Gauteng’s East Rand.

Starting at the Lighthouse and ending at Queens Beach, Capetonians — joined by groups including Women Fight Back and Cape Flats Stories — called for justice, safer streets and an end to the killing of women. The march coincided with the funeral of Kempton Park runner and mother Elizabeth “Tsontso” Moselakgomo.

We spoke to march organiser Gabriella van Wyk about why the community came out and what needs to change.

Thank you to each and everyone who came to our march today! Every voice and every footstep made a difference in showing South Africa how strongly we feel about ending GBV!

To all those women who lost their lives and to those still fighting for theirs! We walked for you today!

Thank you to @cityofct and SAPS for honouring our women today, to the men and families and businesses that came to support and @gabsta_v_w @jazzies_auto_accessories for all the admin involved in creating a successful day of awareness for the women of South Africa in a sea of possibly 1000 people! To WOMEN FIGHT BACK NPC thank you! 🙏🏼

May we never stop being heard and may they allow stricter punishment for these crimes!

Glitterellas is PROUDLY a women’s women run business and supports this movement very strongly and will continue to be!

💜✊🏼

Hundreds marched today along the Sea Point Promenade in solidarity against gender-based violence. The context is frightening: 33.1% (around 7.3 million) of South African women aged 18 and older have experienced physical violence, and 9.8% (2.1 million) have experienced sexual violence in their lifetime, according to the Human Sciences Research Council. The present reality alarming: police are investigating the murders of 9 women over a two-month period in the Ekhuruleni area. As South Africans, we must demand substantive and systemic solutions. This, surely, requires a whole of society response.

Thanks to @gabsta_v_w for bringing us together today. This is a moment. May it be one of many that finally inspires a movement towards meaningful change. #solidaritymarch #genderbasedviolence #enoughisenough #protest #southafrica
