We have a winner! 🎉📸

Meet Mpumelelo Buthelezi (@icreateimageseveryday), the 2026 Africa Soft Power Climate Storytelling Fellow and Photo Essay Prize winner, who will receive a US$2,000 cash prize.

His winning series, “E’Plazini: A Place to Call Home for Waste Collectors,” will travel beyond South Africa as part of a global exhibition, alongside four exceptional finalists: Vanessa Mulondo (Uganda), Kevin Ochieng Onyango (Kenya), Kossivi Nicolas Vava (Togo) and Brian Ongoro (Kenya).

Together, they bring distinct perspectives to the theme, Lines of Survival: Living, Adapting, Imagining Tomorrow.

Art historian and arts administrator Gaëtane Verna brings decades of experience in curating, arts administration and cultural leadership.

She previously served as Executive Director of the Wexner Center for the Arts, Director and Artistic Director of The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery in Toronto, and Executive Director and Chief Curator of the Musée d’art de Joliette in Quebec.

Recognised internationally for her contributions to the arts, Verna was appointed a Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government.

Her insight and curatorial expertise will contribute to recognising the powerful visual stories at the heart of the 2026 Africa Soft Power Climate Change Photo Essay Prize.

I was supported by an über talented mix of staff students and grads to accomplish this magnificent masterpiece ‼️🎤🎬🎥🎼🎉🎉🎉💥💥💥
