The University of Minnesota’s Barbara Barker Center for Dance in Minneapolis, designed by @hgaarchitects, is the 2026 recipient of the 25 Year Award. Congratulations to the team at HGA and their project partners on this achievement! Completed in 1999, the building provided the @umntwincities’s nationally acclaimed dance program with its first dedicated home—a facility designed exclusively for dance education, rehearsal, performance, and creative inquiry. The design emerged through close collaboration between the design team and dancers. Rather than beginning with preconceived architectural forms, the process began by listening to the language of dance itself. Faculty described movement through ideas such as flow, balance, extension, release, and reach, inspiring an architecture that embodies the discipline, rhythm, and expressive energy of dance. Over the past 27 years, the Barbara Barker Center has fulfilled and expanded its original vision. Together with the Rarig Center, Ted Mann Concert Hall, and the subsequently completed Regis Center for Art, it helps form a thriving arts district where dance, theater, music, and visual arts intersect. Today, the university describes the Barker Center as the “nucleus for dance on campus and the hub for movement research and discovery in the Twin Cities dance community.” Read more at the link in our bio. The HGA project team for the Barbara Barker Center for Dance included Joan Soranno, FAIA; John Cook, FAIA; Dan Avchen, FAIA; and Nancy Blankfard, FAIA. @kraus.anderson was the design-build contractor for the project. Established in 1981, the annual 25 Year Award celebrates a 25- to 50-year-old building or group of buildings whose architecture has stood the test of time and continues to demonstrate excellence in architectural design and significance—both in its original context and by today’s standards. At @courseygraves Winery, Charles Stinson and interior designer Jyl Graves, and landscape designer Matt Ripley of @inspired.landscapes approached the property as a collaborative conversation between architecture, interiors, and landscape. . Inside, Jyl’s interior design brings warmth and depth through stone, European white oak, cedar, and natural textures, while Charles Stinson’s architecture creates expansive connections to the valley and vineyard through floor-to-ceiling glass, horizontal planes, and carefully framed views. . Beyond the glass, Ripley’s award-winning landscape design, influenced by legendary Dutch designer Piet Oudolf, brings native California plantings and a naturalistic rhythm to the hillside, allowing the landscape to evolve with the seasons. . Even the hallways were designed to invite the landscape in, making changing light, color, and views part of the everyday experience. The architecture was intentionally designed to get out of the way, and what remains is the view, the light, and the feeling of being connected to land itself. Swipe through to see the evolution of the @livefront space! It’s always incredible looking back at where a project began. Over just a few months, our team took a wide-open, concrete footprint and transformed it into a detailed, highly functional environment filled with custom wood accents and smooth architectural curves. Watching the vision come together step-by-step is easily one of the best parts of what we do. We are so grateful for the opportunity. A huge thank you to @studio__bv, @henricksen.mn, @r2companies, @wlhallco, the @livefront team, and many more for all their hard work. Coursey Graves Winery @courseygraves is an example of estate architecture designed to belong to the land without competing with it. . For Charles Stinson, the approach to this vineyard architecture began with the hillside itself. The residence was carefully positioned within the knoll, allowing the home to emerge from the landscape while the vineyard rises naturally beneath it. Horizontal planes, stone, and glass create a quiet relationship with the surrounding land, connecting the architecture to its setting rather than separating it from it. . From gates to the hilltop residence, Charles Stinson considered each structure as part of a larger composition, creating a small village of spaces that support the life of the estate. A difficult site can sometimes become the beginning of something extraordinary. In this feature on our Spring Lake Modern, @midwestdesignmag explores how an irregular shoreline, a triple lot, and a family’s love of life on the water shaped a home that meanders toward the lake. This property finds a thoughtful balance between form, function, and the way life unfolds on the water. Click the link in bio to read the story of Spring Lake Modern in Midwest Design Magazine. . The seasons may change, yet life at your lake home doesn't have to end at the water's edge. An indoor pool carries the feeling of the shoreline inside with spectacular views, while the sauna, game and lounge spaces, and wine room create quieter places to gather, reflect, and linger together...an expression of modern design shaped around how a family lives. While great modern design is not meant to be noticed, it seamlessly fits within the rhythms of daily life. Drawing from the simplicity and practicality of Japanese architecture, the interiors of our Spring Lake Modern home uses restraint, warmth, and thoughtful details to create a calm backdrop for everyday life and for the landscape beyond.
