Joy was in the room on Saturday morning!

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the opening of 'Joy Comes in the Morning'. The gallery was filled with laughter, chatter, coffee and pastries.

One of the highlights was a conversation between exhibiting artist @gahmichael Michael Gah and @chrisjdmoller on why joy matters. Guests listened in, asked questions and joined in the discussion, then wandered through the exhibition to take in the works up close.

Our heartfelt thanks to the artists, to everyone who came, and to all who made the morning so special. It was a joy to share it with you.

Cloth is as much a historical manuscript as it is functional.

'Joy Comes in the Morning' is now open at Christopher Moller Gallery.

Ghana, the “Gold Coast”, carries her own story woven between fibers of cotton, rayon and silk. Weavers work their looms to produce Kente, keeping the stories of thousands of people alive.

The five artists in this group exhibition are connected to textiles in their own way: some use cloth directly in their work, others capture the richness of its colour, or their paintwork echoes its woven quality.

Join us this Saturday!

We open 'Joy Comes in the Morning' this Saturday 17 October, with a morning of art, conversation and celebration featuring Prof. Ablade Glover, Daniel Nartey, James Mishio, Michael Gah and Emmanuel Kwaku Yaro.

Opening program:
🕗 10 - 11 AM: Welcome and exhibition viewing. Coffee and light refreshments.
🕘 11 - 11:45 AM: 'Why Joy Matters Now'. Michael Gah in conversation with Christopher Moller. Exploring how we nurture joy, compassion and connection in the world we live in today.
🕤 11:45 - 12 noon: Audience questions.
🕙 12 noon - 1 PM: Exhibition viewing continues.

A story about my mother, she used to sell oranges on weekends and she always has a great smile on her face even though it was difficult, so growing up in such a joyful family shaped my thoughts. I mostly use the color or the fruit orange to represent Joy. Oranges, variously understood, have featured in human culture since ancient times. They first appear in Western art in the Arnolfini Portrait by Jan van Eyck, but they had been depicted in Chinese art centuries earlier, as in Zhao Lingrang’s Song dynasty fan painting Yellow Oranges and Green Tangerines. By the 17th century, an orangery had become an item of prestige in Europe, as seen at the Versailles Orangerie. More recently, artists such as Vincent van Gogh, John Sloan, and Henri Matisse included oranges in their paintings. #orangeart #art #orange #artwork #joy

One of my highlights of the @investeccapetownartfair is meeting incredible, inspiring people in the art and creative world. 😊❤️ From artists, gallery owners, curators to everyone in between.

These are some of them:
1. @kimathimafafo whose work I have loved since the Art Fair 2024. Her Sisterhood piece captured me. I finally met her when she came up to me at the VIP opening. 😊💕
2. I met artist @sanjo_lawal on VIP opening night. Notably, his work is on the cover of the first edition of @elle_afriquefrancophone this month. 😊👏🏾
3. I saw @mariella.franzoni for the 3rd time in a row during her Tomorrows/Today walkabout and she recognised me. ❤️
4. It was great to see @wunika again. We met last year at @fnbartjoburg. 💕
5. I also met @rv_windsor of @windsor.gallery again a year later at the same fair. Congratulations to him as he leads the Nigeria pavilion at the 2028 @labiennale 👏🏾🇳🇬

6. I also finally met brilliant portrait artist @kcltwala. Her mother, who is the muse in the painting that started her rise, took this picture. 💛🇧🇼
7. It’s not an art fair if I don’t run @gail_bosch from @itooartinsure, who sponsor the Talks programme.😊❤️
8. I caught my fave @mankebeseakgoe there as well with her artwork. 🩶
9. I met @yvonneshaff1 who is the MD/co-founder of @yourluxury_africa at their booth. 😊
10. A moment with @chidi.co who is this year’s Tomorrows/Today prize winner.👏🏾

11. I met curator @ebuhlanti_republik after her talk and her words moved me during that talk. 🙏🏾✨
12. Seeing @gahmichael again was a delight. His work always features at the fair since I started going. I’m always drawn to it. 😊🙌🏾🧡
13. Always great seeing artist @blessingrooithe1st ❤️
14. I met @jo_annstrauss at her @artdacitypodcast booth. Inspiring. 🙌🏾
15. I also met artist @manyaku_mash after her talk. 🤎

16. I met @dagim_d_abebe whose work I posed with at @fnbartjoburg 😊
17. I got to speak Spanish at the @galeriadearteluisapita booth. 😊🇪🇸

Be cautious about the waste you take out to the environment, as it affects not just human beings, but the living organisms found in the environment, especially in the ocean which is our source of life.

@gahmichael speaks more about his creative output how it advocates for a clean environment and is well taken care of.

On the first day of @investeccapetownartfair, we met artists across the globe, visitors, exhibitors, and consumers of art.
