POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Over the last few months, I’ve been honored to print on-site at a series of exhibitions, starting with Press & Pull: A Legacy of the Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop at Gallery 400 in September and continuing with Creative Rebellion at the Chicago Cultural Center.

At Gallery 400, Chicago Printers Guild member Gabe Hoare and I led a hands-on workshop exploring color, texture, and experimentation through risography, relief printing, and monotype. Thank you, Gabe, for working and playing with me and making space for collective experimentation through print.

Press & Pull explores the legacy of Robert Blackburn’s Printmaking Workshop, founded in 1947 as a space for collaboration and racial integration during a time of segregation. Bringing together archival prints and works connected to Chicago’s printmaking history, the exhibition celebrates the power of shared resources, skill sharing, and collective making. I see this legacy continuing in the spaces we build for artists to learn, experiment, and create together.

Thank you to Aaron Hughes for inviting me to print on-site at the Cultural Center last Friday. Working with materials on hand and images from my archive, we made new prints in response to the exhibition and its histories.

For this session, I used VTC Tatsuro, a sans-serif typeface designed by Tré Seals of Vocal Type. The typeface is based on the handwritten “I AM AN AMERICAN” sign that Japanese American grocer Tatsuro Matsuda hung outside his Wanto Co. store in Oakland, California, on December 8, 1941—the day after the attack on Pearl Harbor, just before he and his family were forcibly removed and incarcerated during World War II. Using a typeface rooted in that history felt especially meaningful within an exhibition exploring resistance to war and militarism.

I appreciate these opportunities to bring printmaking into exhibition spaces, not just as a finished object, but as a process of experimentation, exchange, and collective memory.

I’m planning another printing session in November. More to come. To be continued…

This month's featured artist is na forest lim. na forest lim (they/them) is an autistic, queer, and trans artist, film director, and photojournalist from South Korea. They practice sustainable poetic living in Waawiyaatanong and use visual storytelling to tenderly lift up the resilience of marginalized individuals and communities.

Forest's photo for this month's Art Picks is from a series of photographs featuring Iman Payne, a Black queer farmer based in Detroit. In forest’s words: “Black farmers have faced systemic discrimination and violence, which forced many to lose their land or relinquish ownership, leading to a decline in Black-owned farms. Some shifted to sharecropping, while others moved to cities like Detroit in search of better opportunities. Today, efforts continue to reclaim land and advocate for Black farmers’ rights.”

Thank you @gallery400 for including "Reflection" as part of the Streetside Project. On view at West Van Buren and Peoria Street.

Through hand-cut paper collage, photography, and digital drawing created on a phone app, these works reimagine emotional landscapes as spaces for reflection and renewal. In Caught up in my Feelings, My Private Island, and Alone Again, Naturally, layered fragments of imagery become quiet meditations on isolation, resilience, and inner grounding during difficult times. Rooted in both personal reflection and the restorative presence of nature, the works invite viewers to slow down, look inward, and remember the importance of remaining present while continuing forward through uncertainty.

Catherine Lyu & Naeemeh Naeemaei: A Collaborative Reading & Unreading

April 23rd
5:30-6:30pm
Gallery 400

A reading of the Song - Sing - Sang by Catherine Lyu in collaboration with a reading of the White Books by Naeemeh Naeemaei. Through a series of quiet, deliberate actions, Naeemeh engages with approximately ten books selected solely for their white covers, regardless of their content. She will be using them to respond to Catherine’s reading of her translations of one of her grandpa’s poems. The echoing of sounds together with the materiality of the objects forms a language of communication between the artists and their memory objects.
