“I want us to never forget that humor has to be a part of the revolution” -bell hooks

Today we honor and remember bell hooks on her birthday, not for what she gave the world but for who she dared to be despite the odds stacked against her. Belonging, equality, education... her legacy spans sectors, genres, and categories, yet we often forget just how funny she was.

Check out this short clip featuring bell hooks and OBI director @profjohnapowell from the 2015 Othering and Belonging Conference, which is sure to give you a little laugh.

“We have to gather and think together, slowly, eat together, drink together, put our heads together, our hearts together, dance together. Somewhere in the midst of these feedback loops, change happens.”

Join us this October in Louisville, Kentucky. Hearts and heads together. We are in. Are you?

“When we talk about bridging… when @profjohnapowell talks about bridging it’s not to avoid the tough necessary conditions to avoid repair. It’s to create the conditions to have them. And the condition to have that conversation… is to have deep care and love for each other and deep recognition of each other’s humanity.” -Cecilie Surasky at #OBCONF24

Kentucky knows something about fighting back. As Kristal Swim of @unumfund Pluribus Unum reminded us in her recent letter, the Bluegrass State carries a deep history of resilience and fiercely independent communities that know how to come together across difference when the stakes are high.

That’s part of why Louisville is the right place for the 2026 Othering & Belonging Conference.

This October, we will bring together more than 1,000 changemakers for two days of relationship-building, strategy, culture, and collective action in downtown Louisville. Calling all:

✨ Grassroots organizers
✨ Researchers and academics
✨ Artists and culturemakers
✨ Policymakers and public leaders
✨ Philanthropy, business, and civic partners

We want to see you there! Meet us in Louisville link in bio.

We don’t want anyone to leave the 2026 Othering and Belonging conference as a stranger or arrive as one.

That’s why we’re hosting pre-conference meet-ups for registrants to start building connections well before we get to Louisville. Our first virtual meet-up is on June 23 at 1:00 PM ET with the one and only @sarahcrowell65! #obconf26 #belonging
