The countdown has begun!

In less than a month, the 2026 Othering and Belonging Conference will be in Louisville. During the breakout blocks on October 9 and 10, we are offering 18 interactive breakout sessions that will take some of the biggest questions at #OBCONF26 and turn them into 90 minutes of practice, analysis, storytelling, and strategy.

one of our conference speakers: @crystalwilki, a recent recipient of a Writing Freedom fellowship, is the award-winning author of Praisesong for the Kitchen Ghosts, a national-bestselling culinary memoir; Perfect Black, a collection of poems; and three works of fiction. Wilkinson served as Poet Laureate of Kentucky from 2021 to 2023, and currently teaches creative writing at the University of Kentucky where she is the Director of the Division of Creative Writing.

On October 9th, Crystal will bring her creative skills, dynamic leadership, and inventive energy for our opening discussion: Belonging is a Story We Write Together.

I love these kids so much. They knew so much at 20.. 🥹

I went to a beach in Athens on Friday and I’ve never seen so many high school kids in my entire life in one place. Turns out in Greece it was the last day of school and it’s a tradition to go to the beach on the last Friday for older kids…. There was a completely riotous energy, with lots of chasing and playing chicken and throwing balls too hard at bodies and hugging and dunking (for alarmingly long periods) under the sea…
I could see that some of the adults were annoyed, but it turned out to be one of my favorite days I’ve ever had at the beach in Greece. I just loved the way these kids were so completely self-contained, so truly present with their friends and their time, and also so awkward but out there anyway. There’s an earnestness and a lens people have at that age that I feel such incredible tenderness for.. . I think the 17-25 age range is oftentimes vastly misunderstood or ignored or something society is signaling we just need to “get through” .. It got me thinking about who I was at that age and the throughlines that have followed me since then - not the least of which is my life partner who I fell in ❤️ with then, but also the beginning contours of my values, my passions (like reading and being insatiably curious), and my worldview (justice and care).. I put this little picture up on my desk to remind me who we were then and how much we actually did know or had the seeds of knowing inside so I can remember that for my own kids and really for all kids.
