On Wednesday night, @decenteredarts held another #PoolsidePoets at the beautiful @saintjosephsartsfoundation

The night started off with some uncanny pop 'n locking from @intricacito

Dude was amazing!! @intricacito

The lovely hosts of the evening Rhea Joseph (@rheality_check_ ) and Connie Lin (@ggllittcchh ). The theme of the night was #StrangerThanFiction with the dress code being "surreal"

Next month #PoolsidePoets will ring in its 3 year anniversary!!

The night's first poet was #GirlDad @jeremymichaelvasquez who read about being "California sober for most days of the week" and wanted to know "what's the point of shopping at Goodwill if I dont have any?" #MoodSwingsAndNoseBleeds

@jeremymichaelvasquez also shared how "a good place to hide our suffering is behind a smile" and that monsters are never hiding; they're always in plain sight, sometimes even looking back at you in the mirror.

Co-host Connie Lin (@ggllittcchh ) then took the stage to share her poems about how "life is a game of chicken between you and everything" and also a "hostage negotiation."

Ben Draffin (@bdraff ) read his poetry from a very tiny printer and accompanied himself with a mini-karimba.

His poems involved "hiding from the pain" and how "under my mind is a river" filled with "a liquid my curiosity is made from" #PourMeFromTheTap

@sage.the.space read a piece about a "pearl hidden so deep within my oyster" and seeing the "vision of me I had dreamt of my whole life."

The musical guest of the night was @silver.swoon #RockOn🤘

@_fidelius__ played the Peruvian flute...

...and then performed a poem in Spanish! #Volver #Corazon #Todo

Aracely Knox read about her pain being deep and the "pain of unforgettable love"

@adaviagena , who runs the monthly reading series @sultry_sessions , read a piece about getting it on with a lover, feeling the #EctasyAndDopamine However, while in the throes of doing the deed, her guy sticks his fingers down her throat which doesn't end well. Lets just say he didn't get a Happy Meal and he was definitely not lovin' it 🤮🤮

The final poet of the night was Jawno Okhiuli (@gardenradical ) who read a poem about the #PeriApocalypse pinpointing the "precise

A little bit about the artists:

Ian Santillano is a Filipino-American singer, songwriter, guitarist, and producer whose genre-blurring sound weaves together alternative R&B, neo-soul, indie, folk, jazz, and funk. With virtuoso guitar work, soulful vocals, and emotions-bared songwriting, Ian creates intimate performances that explore identity, growth, love, and healing.

SundaY is an Oakland-based singer, songwriter, and performer whose music blends contemporary R&B, soul, and hip-hop influences with effortless vocal warmth and emotional honesty. Her smooth, expressive style and captivating stage presence bring together soulful melodies, thoughtful lyricism, and an unmistakable authenticity.

Nytesia Ross is an award-winning poet and storyteller who has performed nationwide, from New York to California, including at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Her work has been featured on NPR’s All Things Considered and at Stanford’s World House Documentary Film Festival. She has also spoken at notable events, including one honoring Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson.

redella is a UK-born, Oakland-based singer-songwriter creating soulful alternative music that blends acoustic storytelling with angelic tones, emotional textures, and always a twist in the tale . Drawing on experiences performing from London’s underground music scene to the Bay Area, she crafts songs that are intimate, powerful, and rich with emotion.

Jawno is a soul singer-songwriter with roots in San Francisco, Texas, and Nigeria. Through uplifting songs that blend soul, storytelling, and heartfelt conviction, he invites audiences to imagine a world where we care more deeply for one another and for the planet we all call home.
