2025 Race Season

What a wild year.
I made a decision to race as much as possible in 2025 having skipped’24, which meant the season kicked off way back in January on the 🇪🇸 Spanish MTB circuit and rolled all the way through to back-to-back UCI Gravel races in 🇳🇱 Holland and 🇧🇪 Belgium at the end of October.

I’ve raced a lot—probably too much—but the truth is, I just love racing bikes.

It’s been a mixed bag on the MTB: I struggled to get my UK Nats form going, but was really happy with consistent performances throughout the Scottish races.

Gravel, though… what a year. It’s opened up a whole new world of adventure and kept everything feeling fresh and exciting.

After a few weeks of kicking back - the quick summary:

24 race days

• 11 MTB
• 13 Gravel

🏆 5 Wins

🥈 🥉 13 Podiums

2 DNF’s

🥇 GrAlba Series Overall 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

🥇 UCI Gravel World Series – Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

🥈 Scottish XC Series Overall 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

🥉 Scottish XC National Champs 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

🥉 Scottish Gravel National Champs 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

9th British National XC Champs 🇬🇧

🌈 105th UCI gravel World Champs 🇳🇱

A very happy old man, back doing what I love, surrounded by sound, positive people.

I’m already buzzing for next season—more racing, more coaching with @nevadaperformance , and some exciting adventures planned.

Huge thanks to the incredible people who look after me: @saddleback_ltd
@ciclo_devon

you make this all possible and I’m so grateful for all that you do to put me in the best gear on mint bikes, it really is special ❤️

And, as always, the biggest thanks to my long-suffering wife Mary, for everything she does to support (and survive) this obsession ❤️

@scottishcx rd 4 Tross Cross at @gartmorehouse and I said last year this was the my favourite course and it did not disappoint this year either.

I knew from the start list I was in for a tough time so an 8 mile run on Friday followed by a 60 mile cycle on Saturday made sure I was suitably limbered up.

A short start straight followed by a narrow left hander always had disaster written all over it, as I came round the corner the bunch slowed and pushed over and my bar got caught on Neil Scott’s rear wheel then @jmddnn was having a good look at my rear wheel we became lovingly entwined and unable to move for a few seconds dropping to the middle of the pack.

Dropping so far back I was in for fully trying to commit to riding the off camber in-front of the house a few occasions thwarted by other riders and other attempts the lack of skill was to be seen in the last 3 photos as I took a closer examination of the finest @gartmorehouse mud.

Some great close racing a solid elbow to elbow battle with @milo.mcintosh and @muzza_g06 was such a laugh, the spectators around the course especially around the bowl corner was incredible too. Big love to the cross family you keep me coming back, thanks to the Oakley family and @coop_s74 in the pits for me all helped me get a very surprising P8.

Thought these pics had disappeared in the land of dead media but they surfaced from @thriveballater gravel race and the final round of the @gralba_series.

Turned up with my gravel bike and immediately being asked what bike I had brought was a little concerning. A long road neutralised section to start at a pretty spicy pace I was happy to be on my gravel bike followed by a long shift climbing still happy on my gravel bike till we started to descend and I found the reason I was asked if had my XC bike as I battered downhill through boulders the size of a small child.

Riding with the front of the race I was surprised to see myself there on the big lap but not long in to the first of 3 short laps I was distanced on the climbs unable to match the climbing power of the leaders. Left me and my man @gary_maca duelling it out, his insane descending speed meant I got dropped every time going down and had to catch on the flats / climbs until the inevitable happened and I punctured waving bye to @gary_maca 😢

Puncture sorted and locked back in battle with @dar07en but the shoe was on the other foot I was the faster descender and @dar07en would just winch me back on the climb.

Finished up P5 overall and 2nd in age group and was good enough to take 2nd overall in the @gralba_series behind the absolute flying @gary__lazereyes. Clearly a very happy man to be wearing my Scottish Champs jersey with @john_mackenzie helping display the stripes on the start line 😁

Back for a second stab at the mythical @3peakscx

Racing such an iconic event alongside and with the support of friends and family on a warm, sunny Sunday in September just felt like a real privilege, and the best possible way to see out another good race season!

My day got off to a bad start being taken down in a high speed crash in the first 5km ‘neutralised’ road section. I got away lightly but my mech hanger was bent and so kept throwing the chain off into the spokes whenever I shifted into my lowest gear - making the steep climbs that little bit more torturous.

Other than that I had a nice clean ride, stayed upright for the remainder of the race and kept air in both my tyres - which is about as much as you can ask for at the Peaks.

Really happy to have rolled in 7th having ridden almost every part of the course a good bit quicker than my first attempt a couple of years ago, despite the setbacks.

I’m already looking forward to returning to the Dales for next year’s edition.

Huge thanks to my support crew on the day @elgriffo_ & @molly.ridingx and my sponsors for continuing to help make these experiences possible.

2025 season ☑️
First full TT season and first season with @mfccbikes colors 💪. Went undefeated and was competing with a lot of strong adults all season. Really happy with how the season went results and numbers wise.
Can't wait for next season to see how I get on with all my gears.
