I had an amazing time this weekend celebrating my dad’s induction into the PV Hall of Fame! 🏆💜💛

It was great spending time with family and having the opportunity to take my boys to experience the excitement and tradition of an HBCU football game. These are the moments and experiences that create lasting memories.

I’m incredibly proud of Mark Spivey Sr. for leading by example and representing what it means to be a great father, educator, and man. His dedication, leadership, and impact are something to admire, and I’m grateful my boys have the opportunity to witness that legacy firsthand.

Congratulations, Dad! This honor is well deserved! Much love and respect! #PVHallOfFame #HBCUPride #FamilyFirst #Legacy #ProudSon 💜💛

Writing Without Apology.

Born in Chicago and raised in Alabama, WJ Lofton’s creative work breathes life into the intricacies of identity, race, grief, masculinity, and love. His latest poetry collection, boy, maybe, doesn’t just speak, it dares, whispering unspoken truths into the spaces where silence once lived.

As an exploration of Black queer becoming, boy, maybe takes readers on an intimate journey of memory and meaning.

In his conversation with Native Son, Lofton opens up about language, legacy, liberation, and why queerness, for him, is both a politic and a love practice.

On Juneteenth 2018, I was offered my first teaching role as an 8th grade history teacher. I had no idea how deeply this work would shape me. ✨📚

Since then, I’ve taught 5th, 6th, and 8th grade, held multiple leadership roles, and even took nearly 100 students to see Hamilton on Broadway — one of my proudest moments. 🎭💫

Now, seven years to the date, I’m honored to share that I’ve been named one of 10 recipients of the 2025–2026 Big Apple Teacher Award & Fellowship, selected from over 4,000 applicants, and the only charter school fellow, out of more than 280. 🍎🏆

This moment wouldn’t be possible without divine alignment. Thank you to my sorority sister: Sofia Mohammad, who encouraged me to apply after we randomly crossed paths. Thank you to my principal: Mr. Scott, who has given me grace and helped me grow in this career. Thanks to my other school leaders, and most importantly, thanks to my village:
💐 My mother and best friends (Joy, Dae, and Ki)
📘 My Big Sister Katie
👩🏾‍🏫 My colleagues turned family: Jalina, Bria, Gary, Ashton, Latia, Temi & Mike
💕💚 My Lambda prophytes, line sisters, neos & mentors from Tau Omega

To my students (past and present) and their families: this is for you. You are my why. You are the future. You will change the world as global leaders 🌍👑

Special thanks to two educators who changed my life — Ms. Alexandra Glankoff (RIP) and Dr. Ruby Hutchison — my 6th and 9th grade history teachers (respectively) who ignited my passion to learn more about the past.

Thank you to the NYC Department of Education, the Big Apple Awards Committee, and Chancellor Melissa Avilés-Ramos for this honor.

I’m excited to grow alongside such an inspiring cohort of educators and continue building opportunities for NYC scholars. 💫

📸: @christine.ashley, my LS, who accepted my first educator award at the 88th NARC. 💕💚
