The book “A Guide to Making Contemporary-Style Métis Ribbon Skirts”, written by Bonny Johnson and Leah Marie Dorion, can be purchased during your next visit to the Saskatchewan Craft Council. It is a comprehensive instructional manual on how to create your own ribbon skirt, with a foreword and introduction by the authors, as well as historical information about the origins and significance of Ribbon Skirts in Métis culture.

All proceeds go to Gabriel Dumont Institute (@gdins_org) to support their mission “to promote the renewal and development of Métis culture through research, materials development, collection and distribution of those materials, and the design, development and delivery of Métis-specific educational programs and services”. Our current exhibition, “We Wear them with Pride” is on display until March 9. This exhibition is co-organized by Gabriel Dumont Institute and the Saskatchewan Craft Council.

Thank you again to all of our sponsors who have supported us over the last eight years. With your generosity, we have been able to provide countless kids with the supplies they need to engage in their learning.

With our remaining funds, we have decided to support the future of Indigenous education in our province and contribute to the Gabriel Dumont Institute Scholarship Fund.

One of the missions of GDI is to promote renewal and development of Métis culture through the design, development, and delivery of Métis-specific educational programs and services. It was founded in 1980 with the goal of finding a way to give Métis and non-status Indian people a say in the preservation of, respect, promotion, and enhancement of Aboriginal culture.

We couldn’t be prouder to support GDI’s students and programming.

The skirts in this exhibition were all made in recognition of the maker’s cultural connection and to honour their ancestry. The styles and patterns of today’s modern ribbon skirts have been adapted yet still reflect the style of the skirts worn by Métis ancestors. Each ribbon skirt is unique, full of personal details and choices including beading, embroidery, fabric types, and colour choices.

Artists include: Chelsea Rodriguez, Shan LaMontagne, Erin Dyck, Shawna Dubiel, Amy Briley, and Amanda Fisher-Laframboise.

Our exhibition Gishchi-iteeyihteenaanee-kishkamaahk: We Wear Them with Pride is on until March 9 at 813 Broadway Ave, co-organized by the Gabriel Dumont Institute and the Saskatchewan Craft Council.

The Hackathon was a HUGE success, with a diverse group of people gathering to problem-solve and move economic reconciliation forward!

This event couldn’t have happened without you. We are so proud of how you, our community, responded through funds, volunteers, and mentorship.

Rideau Hall Foundation's Indigenous Teacher Education Initiative (ITE) has awarded $13.2 M in grants to 7 Indigenous-led education programs from diverse educational institutions across Canada.

Guided by the RHF National Advisory Committee on Indigenous Teacher Education (NACITE), the ITE initiative is committed to supporting communities and increasing their capacity to hire and train Indigenous teachers. These grants represent a significant investment in creating lasting, positive change for Indigenous communities across Canada.

With initial funding support from the Mastercard Foundation, the ITE initiative is rooted in partnerships with Indigenous peoples, organizations, and communities nationwide.

Our goal is to build sustainable Indigenous teacher employment opportunities, promote learning and leadership in Indigenous communities, and increase the number of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis teachers. Through these efforts, we aim to create transformative, culturally relevant, and responsive change in education systems and workplaces across Canada.

The RHF is grateful for initial funding support by the @mastercardfoundation for helping to make this vision possible.
