The Japanese wine and movie night at Gemini turned out to be a perfect exercise in wabi-sabi: the Japanese aesthetic of finding beauty in imperfection. Think patinated doors, moss-covered stones, or kintsugi, the art of repairing broken ceramics with gold-infused lacquer.

The first crack you might have noticed was the absence of local legend Pat behind the bar. In his place was Travis, a worthy successor and a new legend in the making. Not quite a doppelgänger, but a similar vibe: the chill of a friend having you over to share his secret stash and isn’t stingy with his pours.

On this particular night, I journeyed through three wines from @seapriestselections : @chateaukiri Mt. Kurikoma Pet Nat, @fujimaruwinery's Glou Glou Rosé, and @fattoriaalfiore's Bis Rippasso. All rosés. All delicious.

The Glou Glou, however, stole my attention. My tasting notes say it packed quite a punch, like a watermelon Jolly Rancher in liquid form: juicy, exuberant, mouthwatering, delightfully tart.

The crowd for the evening was an eclectic mix of teachers, cinema majors, wine buyers, connoisseurs, and dabblers, gathered for an experience curated by @leopardtemple, who had procured the sequel to Samurai Wolf for the occasion.

As the evening progressed, the crowd splintered in two: those who came to socialize headed outside, while the cinema fans stayed in. Come showtime, the lights dimmed, and a sober silence settled over the room. The samurai film unfolded in grayscale while the room itself was bathed in red. It was the sort of experience that makes one contemplate mortality, and, in my case, scribble down a haiku:

Somber grayscale flick
Natural wine and death
Memento mori

Then the door opened. The silence broke, if only momentarily, as lively chatter spilled in from outside. Someone had arrived with tacos from the truck out front.

Birria and Japanese wine? A mismatch? Ha! What might seem like another break in continuity was, in fact, a harmonious synthesis of contradictions: cinematic contemplation, Jolly Rancher wines, and piping-hot birria. Soon the plate, the glass, the seats were empty; only their memory remained.

Fleeting. Idiosyncratic. Perfect wabi sabi.

Turns out we’re pretty good at the “social” part too.

No miles this time. Just good music, good wine, new faces, familiar faces, and a room full of people actually talking to each other.

Our first Social Pace social at Gemini Wine Bar officially set the bar. 🍷

Huge thank you to Gemini Wine Bar for opening up their space to us and letting us bring The Social Pace to life for the night.

Shoutout to Ramiro for keeping the music right all night, and to everyone who pulled up and made our first one feel like anything but a first one.

Yeah… we’re doing this again.

We’re back at Gemini Wine Bar one week from today to watch a great sequel. Brace for more bloody action, visual flair, and a new character played by the great Ko Nishimura! It’s also Lucio’s birthday bash so come thirsty 😈
