Friday was one of the most wholesome mornings of my life! ❤️

Thoresby Primary's celebration assembly for Rainbow of Emotions, the first ever pupil voice led picture book, co-produced by myself but built with their Year 5 and 6 pupils as part of the Happy Doodles method through 6 tailored workshops. This video was created by Thoresby and they kindly gave me permission to share the joy on here too 🌈

There were tears all round, including mine, especially seeing the very start of this journey for the first time, right back to when the school's Arts Council pupils chose me as their local artist to work with! I'm so grateful!

This project has taken us from that first meeting, all the way through to a finished book that pupils have taken home to keep, and a legacy left at the school and across the trust.

Before we started, 0 out of 11 children said they found it easy to talk about their feelings.
By the end, 8 out of 11 were using drawing as a way to cope. It is now a book that will sit in the homes of these pupils, as well as in the school and the other schools within their trust, and stocked in @hull.libraries ! 📖

That is what Happy Doodles stands for. Giving children a way to say what words alone sometimes can't hold, and to support them through it step by step, in an accessible, low-barrier, peer led way.

I am beyond honoured and proud of every single pupil who poured themselves into this book, and of Thoresby for trusting the process from day one, and for Generation Hull & Arts Council England for their trust in me and their funding.

This is only the beginning! I want Happy Doodles to reach so many more children, classrooms, schools and communities across Hull and beyond, giving more children that same first moment of realising a doodle can hold a feeling that words can't yet reach.

It’s been a really busy week - and happenings have included last nights Celebration Launch of The Shape of Acceptance exhibition at Hull Central Library!

This colourful and joyful installation (and accompanying zine) is an artistic collaboration between me and the @generationhull Arts Council pupils at @maletlambert, using @gfsmithpapers and whole load of creative storytelling.

It was a well attended event with lots of lovely comments about the work on display, some interviews with @curiosityhull and some really heartfelt speeches from those involved. And the richest vegan chocolate brownies you could imagine.

This free exhibition is on at Hull Central Library until 30 July - so please make sure you swing by when you’re next in town! You’ll be delighted by it all, I’m sure!
