This canvas took me four months, the first painting I’ve ever made…

#josephonthenet #andywarhol #canvaspainting #warhol

Seeing this Warhol in person is where it all started… back in April 2025 I was in Melbourne for @rebirthbygenesis and I visited the @ngvmelbourne with @paranoiddrops and ended up standing in from of this piece for way longer than I meant to. Looking back now I can draw a straight line between that moment and then completion of this painting itself.

Warhol was my introduction to screen printing so seeing this piece wasn’t just about the craft of it. I was also drawn to the subject of the matter. He spent his career picking apart fame, celebrity lifestyle and idolisation and the way we build people up onto pedestals that we later tear them down from. I realised the similar message through my commentary of @genesisworn most popular collection POPSTAR. Except somewhere along the way I’d started doing the same thing this message was warning against, idolising a version of something.

Going in blind but we the school of DIY over here. I designed the whole pattern digitally first, then built the frame and started from there. 5 ft x 5 ft because if I was gonna paint something why not it have some size to it haha?

Masking every single star shape by hand before we could brush over multiple layers to make the camouflage look seamless - just like graphic design.

Tried multiple attempts before landing on the combination that worked the best. Wouldn’t have been able to do this phase without @harryjmcm assistance.

The end of an Era…

My debut canvas. Who wants it? Finished hand-painted camouflage artwork titled ‘POP is dead’, 2026, in black, white and grey acrylic painting. Displayed beside an artist wearing a black Popstar logo hoodie by Genesis Worn. Josephonthenet.
