Screen Summit 2026 (#3)

I particularly fell in love with Élizabeth d’Arvieu the Chief Content Officer at Mediawan Pictures (Paris)

She spoke with such passion about French filmmaking, it was so infectious and what came across also,

was her love of English writers (very pleased about that) and our exceptional crews.

What’s not to love!

The afternoon sessions were crammed with delegates and it was difficult to find a place

to stand and shoot the video, so here I am at the river side.

After what was reported in those sessions, we are all looking forward to 2027 and a bumper year for British Filmmaking.

Screen Summit 2026

A series of short videos from my trip to Southbank, London on September 29th.

It was so much more positive than my time there last year, when every Producer seemed depressed.

Yesterday was a good day. We spent three hours together recording The Documentarian concept ad. With:

[L-to-R] Santiago, Antonio (on the sounds desk) — both in Buenos Aires and me, Geoff in Bristol.

The Documentarian is a character in the animated epic urban fantasy series, Gulag Earth.

I’d like to thank Santiago for embodying the role with passion, pathos and dignity.

And to Antonio for his technical mastery.

(Please spread the word and share this post. Thanks)

We are thrilled to announce that Santiago has been cast as the voice in Gulag Earth’s ‘The Documentarian concept ad’.

It will be recorded tomorrow, in Buenos Aires and we’ll be posting more about that in the days to come.

This is great news. We are excited to report we have just launched a casting call in Buenos Aires, for The Documentarian Concept ad.

This is part of the Gulag Earth series universe and as the story begins in Buenos Aires, we had to start here with one of the main characters of the show.

We have a new animated series in development, called "Gulag Earth".

Here are two characters from it, Johannes (a mystical prophet) and Acharith, (a messenger from the realm of Shamayim). They are drawn by Finnuala O'Higgins, who I found on @stage32

OVERVIEW: Out of the multiverse imagination of Satoshi Kon's 'Paprika' and the playbook of Mamoru Oshii's political terrorism in 'Ghost in the Shell', comes a tale of resistance against all the odds. Gulag Earth is a universal story which follows the forsaken and abandoned inhabitants of the planet Earth (Erets). Some choose a non-violent path and others out of a no-lesser desperation, commit to the path of terrorism.

The series follows young people whose path of resistance is stirred by the Master of The Nabi, who shows them that resistance begins within. Erets is a prison, a global gulag, where there are no borders, just a one-world government called Unitas, that has decided resistance…equals death.

I loved this quote from Stanley Kubrick.

Seeing Rachel is designed with no on-the-nose exposition and works totally with the power of suggestion. The most frightening stories are told in our imagination, beyond the power of the censor.

A Message for Christmastime

True art doesn’t have a message, it has meaning.

The medium is the message, not the message the medium.

When I talk about the social impact of art, I do not mean anything ideological, programmatic or policy derived from politic.

True art is spirit, not force; it is animation not coercion; it is resonance not domination.

Artists, true artists, are not ideologues they are prophets, poets, storytellers, imaginists. The pen 'is' mightier than the sword. Artists, true artists, walk in the Spirit, they do not march to imperial martial music.

They have no weapons, they have tools. They are not predisposed to violence, but to disturbing the status quo which justifies human atrocities and ‘natural’ disasters, in the name of progress and profit.

We are here to disturb the peace, not pacify the gatekeepers and manipulators of the truth, for the sake of personal power.

We are artists, because we are compelled by the Spirit to resist and disarm those powers.

That is all. That is enough.

Here’s wishing you peace and every good, this Christmastime.

Even if we reduce film to mere entertainment - as a means of escape - we are giving form & shape to reality by reinforcing the status quo.

“Neither love nor terror makes one blind: indifference makes us blind.” James Baldwin

Personally, I feel that now is the time for filmmakers to reduce the effect of this negation of responsibility and create stories which disturb the status quo.

“Those who say it can’t be done, are usually interrupted by others doing it.” James Baldwin

The afternoon panels were an interesting mix of pessimism (Producers) and optimism (Distributors).

It seems from the various discussions that we are hitting the cultural zeitgeist, with @seeing_rachel as the Sales and Production panel thought there was a strong pre-sales market for films with a strong story and socially relevant content. There was also a call for more psychological thrillers. These are the three key chords sounding in our film.

I loved what Ralph Waldo Emerson said about humanity. (I paraphrase). “People like to be settled, but being unsettled is their only hope.”
