The Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace & Security (GIWPS) highlights women’s leadership in peace & security efforts.

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

I’m excited to be named the first Non-Resident Journalist for Women, Peace and Security at the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security (GIWPS).

For nearly a decade, my reporting has taken me into the lives of women and girls in places where peace and security are fragile. I’m looking forward to building on that work over the coming year, developing a deeper body of independent journalism on women’s lives, rights and freedoms, while contributing to the Institute’s leading work and research.

I’m very grateful to Ambassador Melanne Verveer, Carla Koppell and the fantastic GIWPS team for creating this opportunity, and for their leadership and commitment to women and girls around the world!

What does it really mean to empower women?

It’s more than representation. It’s access to education, financial independence, economic opportunity, and the ability to make choices about one’s own future.

At Georgetown’s Women, Peace and Security Awards, I was struck by how deeply women’s economic empowerment is connected to the well-being of entire communities.

When women have economic agency, the impact extends far beyond the individual. Families become more resilient, communities grow stronger, and opportunities expand across generations.

And this isn’t a conversation just for women. Meaningful progress requires investment, leadership, and commitment from men and women alike. #DrSoniaSingla #Georgetown

Incredibly honored to receive the 2026 Hilary Rodham Clinton Award from the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security. Thank you Secretary @hillaryclinton, Ambassador Melanne Verveer, and everyone at @georgetown_wps for this recognition. Congratulations to my fellow awardees, Reema Nanavaty, @munamartinon, and @professormuhammadyunus.
I launched the @toryburchfoundation to help change the dynamic for women through entrepreneurship. To me, economic power is the answer. It means agency over your future and the ability to take care of your family. For a lot of women, starting a business is how they get there. And once they do, they can transform everything. xTory #HRCAwards

How can mediation remain effective in an era of protracted conflicts, geopolitical fragmentation and growing pressure on multilateral action?

Across the four days of the Forum, discussions will address:
⚖️ the role of norms in peace mediation today
🌍 how mediation can adapt to an increasingly transactional international environment
👥 women’s engagement and informal influence in peace processes
🤝 mediation with criminal armed groups
📖 Islamic jurisprudence as a framework for negotiation
🏛️ the future of state-building
🕊️ mediation, reconciliation and the path towards civic peace in Syria

The conversation will also continue beyond the Forum through The Peacemakers / Les faiseurs de paix, a podcast series hosted by Dr. Pierre Hazan in collaboration with the Geneva Peace Forum and Le Temps.

🎙️ Discover the first episode: “Geneva Conventions for Star Wars?”
In this opening episode, Pierre Hazan speaks with Natália Archinard, who led the Swiss delegation for nineteen years in negotiations aimed at regulating the militarization of outer space: https://www.letemps.ch/podcasts/the-peacemakers/podcast-des-conventions-de-geneve-pour-la-guerre-des-etoiles

We are proud to celebrate our Executive Director's @thenafisa_atiku participation in this year's Global Women Leaders Summit, hosted by the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security and chaired by Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton.

The summit brought together distinguished women leaders in public service alongside a new generation of political and civic leaders from around the world, creating a unique space for cross-generational mentorship, shared learning, and collective action that centered women as architects of a safer digital future, inclusive climate action, and a world that delivers for all.

For us, this means even more because it reminds us why our intergenerational model of leadership matters. Bringing experienced and emerging women leaders into the same room creates opportunities to learn, exchange ideas, and shape the future together.

That's the kind of leadership pipeline we're committed to building for young women.

Засновниця Arm Women Now Ірина Никорак @inykorak увійшла до числа 12 Women Changemakers та взяла участь у Global Women Leaders Summit 2026.

Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security (GIWPS),

Don’t miss their Side Event on UNWEB!!! Today I am writing about WRF and its founders. @sh_ab_jan I have known her for quite a few years (thanks to Mog), and @hanifagirowal from a @georgetown_wps Georgetown University meeting. My toxic trait is, if I don’t know you, I don’t see you! But here I noticed Hanifa; a strong, determined, energetic young lady who was sitting next to SR. Bennett and was introduced as special Rapporteur’s advisor. Her surname pashtoon, I couldn’t be more proud ( fighting off blanket judgments on our identity). Time flew, and Jan 24, 2025 happened ( who wouldn’t remember this date) A Stop Work Order!

Shabnam and Hanifa reached out to @vitalvoices for partnership. VV scanned their potential and expertise and said yes! One year later, FF, their team growing, hiring more and more women. Young generation, women in Afghanistan, interns and leading the path.

Today, I received some update that they successfully drafted a comprehensive report on “ correlation of education ban and child marriage” and guess what? It will be launched at Human Rights Council week in Geneva.

I see the potential in them leading the way! A miss in Pashtun Women. An organized work against forces that intends to cripple our dignity! Their work is, Not ripping others off, no destructive measures, no “others” theory put in practice; just a disciplined and gradual initiative for the upliftment, awareness, justice, WPS, and accountability.

I am glad that in the process of becoming we have also become great friends.
