What happens when strengthening the pelvic floor simply isn’t enough?

As movement professionals, we need to understand more than just muscle strength. Breathing mechanics, pressure management, posture and the relationship between the diaphragm and pelvic floor all play an important role in how our clients move and function.

Hypopressive Teacher Training gives you the knowledge, practical skills and confidence to approach pelvic health differently, expanding your toolkit and helping your clients return to movement with confidence.

✨ Ready to take your teaching to the next level? Our next Level 1 teacher trainings are open for enquiries. Get in touch or follow the link in our bio to find out more!

Had an episiotomy? Let’s talk about the symptom no one warns you about 🛑

If you had an episiotomy during birth, your pelvic floor muscles experienced a physical cut.

And the focus is almost entirely on the surface healing—stitches, salt baths and waiting for the soreness to pass. But what happens underneath?

If the deep scar tissue from that deliberate cut isn’t properly rehabilitated, the whole system can struggle to manage pressure.

The result? Sneezing, laughing, or lifting your baby suddenly starts leading to accidental leaks. Incontinence after birth is common, but it is never something you just have to live with.

If traditional Kegels aren't working (or feel impossible due to tight scar tissue), Hypopressives can change the game.

Standard pelvic floor advice often defaults to repetitive squeezing, but for a pelvic floor dealing with scar tissue, this can sometimes increase tension and worsen symptoms. This is where Hypopressive training becomes essential.

Unlike traditional exercises that push pressure downward, Hypopressives create a intra-abdominal vacuum, gently decompressing the pelvic cavity, mobilising the fascial layers, and stimulating deep core muscles without straining the damaged tissue.

If you are treating postpartum clients—or recovering from a birth injury yourself—it's time to shift the focus from "tightening" to true pressure management.

Ready to rebuild your core from the inside out? 🕊️

During menopause, falling oestrogen levels drastically reduce your body's ability to produce collagen. This leaves the connective tissues and fascia of your pelvic floor thinner, less elastic, and prone to dysfunction. Hypopressives work by releasing tension and retraining these tissues to manage internal pressure. However, your body cannot rebuild that structural integrity without the right raw materials. To restore tissue elasticity, you must consume adequate protein (amino acids) and Vitamin C, which is a mandatory co-factor for collagen production. From my perspective as a sports chef, I always recommend foods like quark, lean proteins, oats, and fresh berries to provide the exact building blocks required. If your connective tissues are starved of nutrients, they will struggle to recover their natural spring. Feed the tissue, then train the system. 🥗

🚨 DO YOU POWER PEE? 🚨

I get it. You’re busy.

So when you finally get to the toilet, you don’t hang around.

You sit down, force it out and get on with your day. 💨

Sound familiar?

“Power peeing” might seem harmless, but regularly forcing your urine out can mean your pelvic floor isn’t doing what it’s designed to do.

Your bladder and pelvic floor work together as a team. Ideally, when you sit down to pee, your pelvic floor should relax and allow your bladder to empty naturally.

When you regularly strain or push to speed things up, you can teach your pelvic floor to work under unnecessary tension. Over time, this may contribute to things like:

• Feeling like you haven’t completely emptied your bladder
• Needing to go again soon after
• Pelvic discomfort or tension
• Changes in your usual bladder habits

💡 Try this instead:

Next time you pee, give yourself a little more time. Sit comfortably, relax your tummy and pelvic floor, and let your bladder do the work.

No pushing. No forcing. No rushing.

Sometimes, looking after your pelvic floor starts with simply… letting yourself pee. 😉

If you’re experiencing bladder or pelvic floor symptoms that are affecting your everyday life, there is always something you can do. One of the IHC UK team are always available to help.

A SCAR IS SO MUCH MORE THAN WHAT WE SEE ON THE SURFACE.

Look at this photograph.

See how the skin puckers and pulls around just a few stitches?

Now imagine what happens when a woman undergoes a Caesarean section.

A C-section involves multiple layers of tissue, including skin, connective tissue, fascia and the uterus. Although the abdominal muscles are usually separated rather than cut, the surgery can still have significant implications for how the abdominal wall heals and functions.

And yet, how often do we truly consider the impact beyond the visible scar?

As women, trainers and health professionals, we need to be having this conversation.

Scar tissue can influence tissue mobility, sensation, comfort and movement. Some women experience tightness, altered sensation or discomfort long after their incision has healed.

And because our bodies function as interconnected systems, rehabilitation deserves to look beyond the scar itself.

This is where Hypopressives can play a valuable role.

Through the combination of postural work, breathing, abdominal wall activation and pressure management, Hypopressives can support the rehabilitation of the core and pelvic floor as part of a whole-body approach.

They don’t remove scar tissue or directly release adhesions, but they can form part of a progressive programme to restore movement, confidence and function once healing is established.

A healed incision doesn’t always mean rehabilitation is complete.

Whether we’re working with a woman who has recently had a C-section or one who gave birth 20 years ago, her surgical history matters.

Let’s raise awareness of the importance of understanding scars, respecting the healing process and looking at the WHOLE body.

Because women’s health deserves more than a surface-level approach.

Pelvic floor symptoms don’t have to mean stopping movement, avoiding exercise or simply accepting that this is how your body is now.

At the International Hypopressives Council UK, we want to help people investigate, learn, move, build and progress.

Understanding when symptoms happen matters. How are you breathing? How are you managing pressure? What happens when you move, lift or exercise? What feels difficult — and what could be changed?

From there, movement can be gradually rebuilt. Strength can be developed. Load and resistance can be added. And your body can be supported to do the things you need and want it to do.

Hypopressives can form part of this wider approach to pelvic health, working with breathing, posture, pressure management and movement rather than looking at the pelvic floor in isolation.

QUALIFYING AS A HYPOPRESSIVE TRAINER ISN’T THE END OF YOUR TRAINING.

It’s really just the beginning.

At IHC UK, we don’t want you to qualify, get a certificate and then be left on your own wondering what to do when a client doesn’t quite fit the textbook.

Bodies are complicated. Research changes. Our understanding changes. And the more people you work with, the more questions you’re going to have.

That’s exactly why we created our IHC UK Teacher Membership, CPD Programme & Instructor Portal.

For £99 a year, our teachers have a place to keep learning, revisiting and developing.

Inside the portal you’ll find our growing library of resources, teaching support, pose and technique information, recordings and material you can return to whenever you need it.

But the bit I’m probably most excited about is our CPD programme.

Throughout the year we bring in people with different areas of expertise to take us beyond simply learning more Hypopressives.

We explore things like:

✨ Pre & postnatal health
✨ Hypermobility
✨ Strength & conditioning
✨ Endometriosis
✨ Trauma, the nervous system & release
✨ C-section recovery
✨ AI and how we can actually use it in our businesses
✨ And, of course, deeper dives into Hypopressives itself.

Because if we’re working with humans, we need to understand more than one method.

You’ll also be part of our IHC UK teacher community, with ongoing support and our teacher WhatsApp group — somewhere to ask the awkward questions, share experiences, troubleshoot and learn from other instructors.

And importantly, this isn’t about collecting CPD certificates.

It’s about staying curious.

Keeping your knowledge current.

Questioning what we thought we knew.

Becoming a better teacher.

And having a professional community around you while you do it.

Whether you’ve just completed Level 1 or you’ve been teaching Hypopressives for years, there should always be something else to learn.

By combining specific postural alignments with targeted thoracic breathing and an apnoea, the hypopressive technique significantly reduces intra-abdominal pressure.

This reduction in pressure creates an automatic, reflexive lift of the pelvic organs. Rather than forcing you to consciously squeeze or brace, it reprogrammes the resting tone of your core and pelvic floor, ensuring your body automatically manages the heavy physical demands of your sport
