Just returned to NY after my longest absence since 2003... a beautiful visit, if achingly brief. A couple of hours before flying back to London I managed to squeeze in a run in the October sunshine in Prospect Park. Afterward, as @dantepfer and I stretched by the lake, we happened upon this majestic individual. A beautiful send-off. Let's not go so long between drinks next time, NY! (And extra special thanks to @fannydelsol_ @theobleckmann @aronoffmatt @ghex @jenniferkesslernyc and the ever-untaggable Matt Penman for the sweet hangs and spontaneous music-making. And not least to Dan for the gait adjustment that has me barely able to walk 2 days later 🤪)

Trio Grande brings together Gilad Hekselman (@ghex) Will Vinson (@willvinsonmusic) and Nate Wood (@natewoodmusic) in a trio format unlike any other 🥁 🎸 🎹

It might look like there’s no bass player, but there are in fact three: Nate Wood is one of the few musicians able to play drums and bass simultaneously at an exceptional level, while Vinson doubles on keyboards and Hekselman creates intricate, interwoven lines across the guitar. Together, they create a sound as expansive as a group twice their size.

Their music moves between complex rhythmic ideas, expansive soundscapes and deeply melodic compositions, with each piece shaped by the group’s ability to shift roles and respond instinctively to one another.

London! We are back!
@thefoxandfirkin on Wed Oct 21 with @artiezaitz and @jack._.thomas .

So excited to bring Organ Night to south London. I’ve only been there a few times but I know you guys have a crazy music community.

This clip is from the NY edition of Organ Night at @restorationsoundstudio featuring two masters @markwhitfieldjr and @ghex . Thank you all for making that show feel so warm and nice!

And the LA show was wild! So much happened it’s sort of too daunting to make content from. But I will get on that eventually.

Thank you for supporting Organ Night! Excited to see you soon in Lewisham.

This Sunday - Oct. 11: Andy Wheelock & WHEE3TRIO with Gilad Hekselman

A rich blending of Jazz, Afro-Latin, and West African musical inspirations are at the heart of drummer Andy Wheelock’s melodic and joyfully dancing compositions with his latest project, the WHEE3TRIO. While using the timbre and pentatonic offerings of the wooden xylophone-like Ghanaian Gyil as a composing tool, Wheelock pictured the inventive voices of pianist Walter Gorra and bassist Gonzalo Teppa to orchestrate sweeping landscapes, intricate dance rhythms, and Afro Pop-tinged street party tunes that are full of joy, and rhythmic surprises.

@andywheelockmusic - Drums + Percussion
@gonzaloteppa - Bass
@waltergorrapiano - Piano
Special Guest, @ghex - Guitar

Caught TWO sets of the Jake SHERMAN Organ Trio last night 🔥🔥🔥

Good REPERTOIRE, nice contrast in the format—duets, a harmonica feature, all of it.

As a serious and eternal student of this music, I always appreciate hearing how other players approach a room💡

Also learned that Mark Whitfield Jr 🥁 and Jake both studied under Ralph Peterson. Else, Gilad’s guitar playing was lyrical and very creative too.

Good reminder to get out and hear live music. 🎶
