City Cafè 📍
408 Main Ave,
Northport, AL

City cafe opened in downtown Northport in 1931 according to the current owner Joe Barger. Next door is the Northport 5 & 10 which dates back to 1850. Just across the street is Anders Hardware Store which dates back to 1909. The University of Alabama campus is just a few short miles away.

Expecting to order breakfast when I entered at 10:15am, I was told that lunch service had started at 10am. I called an audible (football term in honor of U Alabama), and ordered the “meat and three plate” consisting of fried chicken, mashed potatoes/gravy, creamed corn and peach cobbler. The homemade biscuits are a must🤌

The double sided rusty City Cafe hung out front with the “Pepsi shadow” in the background was a sight 💥

I love little buildings like this one tucked onto Tchoupitoulas Street between Julia and St Joseph Streets. You never know long they’ll be with us. Love the old ghost sign.

If you look closely enough at Pittsburgh's grey skies, you might catch a pop of color from a ghost sign.

We’re revisiting our conversation with City Cast contributor (and self-proclaimed ghost sign hunter) Rossilynne Skena Culgan about how to find these relics, what they teach us about Pittsburgh’s history, and what it could mean if we lose them.

This ghost sign was recently uncovered in Dundee city centre and spotted by Russell! It is a sign of Caledonian Insurance Company which was established in 1805, with initial business being fire insurance. From 1833, it also dealt with life assurance. It is also one of the Scotland's oldest companies! Its office in Dundee was in the Caledonian Insurance Building, designed by J.M.Robertson in 1866 📑
The first photo shows the uncovered sign, the second one shows a detail on the door and the third one shows an illustration from 1888. #ghostsignsdundee

P.S. Wishing you good health and much joy in the New Year 2021! 🎊 It has been quite a challenging time for me in the past months so I took a small break from this page - but I really appreciate all your support and sharing ghost signs you came across (not only) in Dundee with me!
