Army doctors aren’t the backup squad. They’re the A-team. 🩺🇺🇸

There’s a myth that the best physicians go civilian and the military gets whoever’s left.

Dr. Rhiana Saunders spent 20+ years proving that wrong.

Think about who Army physicians train beside and lead: surgeons, specialists and researchers who are some of the sharpest minds in medicine. Their patients include Soldiers, families, and people in disaster zones and on the battlefield. They lead teams early, train at a high standard, and take on responsibility most new doctors wait years for.

That’s not a detour from a great medical career. That IS the great medical career.

And joining the team doesn’t have to start on day one of med school. Army Medical Corps HPSP comes in 4-, 3-, 2-, and 1-year scholarships, with full tuition, required fees all covered ➕ a monthly stipend.

🔹 Starting med school? 4-year
🔹 Already an MS1, MS2 or MS3? There’s still a spot on the roster for you.

The A-team is recruiting. Are you in? 👇

She knew she wanted to be a doctor “with every fiber of her being.” Dr. Rhiana Saunders was a military kid on an athletic scholarship at University of Notre Dame when she realized medicine was her calling. Then she did the math.

So in her sophomore year she walked into the Army ROTC office and asked could she be a doctor in the military.

Twenty-plus years later, she says she has “zero regrets.” Not only did she walk out of medical school with minimal debt, she said she had “incredibly brilliant people that helped elevate you,” building both academic acumen and leadership potential.

To learn more about Dr. Saunders’ story and learn how you can compete for Army Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP), Take the next step !!!

🏥🪖Diverse Career Paths, One Mission: Army Social Work

Our Military District of Washington Summer Webinar Series session on Army Social Work Programs brought together three incredible active duty officers, and one thing came through loud and clear: this isn’t a one-size-fits-all career.

CPT Cam Ashdown, PhD, LCSW, BCD enlisted as a 92F in 2010, served eight years enlisted, then commissioned through the Social Work Internship Program. He offered a great answer to a question we hear often: most counseling in the military actually comes from civilian providers — so why does a social worker need to wear the uniform? His answer: picture a ruck march. You’re moving with your unit, boots on ground, doing the mission alongside everyone else — and when a peer needs to talk it through mid-march, you’re right there. That’s military social work. You’re not just delivering care from behind a desk; you’re living the culture, understanding what it means to be a soldier, while still bringing everything National Association of Social Workers expects of a great clinician. That duality — soldier and social worker — is exactly what makes the role, and makes for a compelling statement of motivation for anyone applying to these programs 💡

Clinical care. Behavioral health. Teaching. Research. Leadership. Army Social Work isn’t a narrow lane — it’s a career with room to grow in nearly any direction, all in service of something bigger.

If you’re Interested in the Social Work Internship Program, direct commission pathways, or what life looks like as an Army Social Work officer, be sure to reach out to us so we can help answer your questions. Check out the full recap here:

Have you ever thought, What makes a surgeon technical enough to hold a human heart in their hands 🫀🤲

For Dr. Adrienne Kambouris, part of the answer traces back to deployments — long before cardiothoracic surgery residency @northwesternctsurg , was even the plan. She saw critically ill patients in some of the highest-stakes environments imaginable, and something clicked 💡: this is where she wanted to be.

#CardiothoracicSurgery demands an extraordinary level of technical precision when you’re operating on the heart and lungs. What Dr. Kambouris will tell you is that the military didn’t just introduce her to that world. It built the discipline, composure, and technical rigor she now relies on every single day in the OR.

And to be honest, this is a pattern we’ve seen and heard over and over when we speak with our doctors in the US Army Medical Department (AMEDD): the training doesn’t just prepare you for a job. It sharpens instincts and skill sets in ways civilian tracks often can’t replicate.

If you’re pursuing a career in medicine and wondering what could set you apart from your peers, ask yourself this BIG question ⁉️: where will your skill be proven, not just practiced 🤔

Curious how #ARMYHPSP Send us a DM Today! We’d love to talk it over with you.

Team Training with the US Army, 1st Medical Recruiting Battalion

Huge shoutout to our member @gi_tracy and the incredible team from @us_army_1mrbn
for bringing the energy and teamwork to last weeks team-building workout!

There’s something powerful about stepping outside your comfort zone together — embracing the hard things, pushing through the workout beside one another, and still finding moments to laugh and have fun along the way. That’s where real camaraderie is built.

Thank you all for trusting us with your training and for showing what leadership, resilience, and teamwork look like in action. You attacked every challenge head-on and reminded everyone in the gym that growth happens when people are willing to lean into discomfort together.

We’re grateful to have hosted such a motivated and mission-driven group. Come back anytime — the door is always open for the Gladiators!
