"Shooting film allows me as the cinematographer to have the most authorship over my image, which is rare for cinematographers nowadays. It required me to be precise in my exposure, and I used the flexibility of the medium as a vehicle for character development and story. I wanted this piece to feel like a school photo, and shooting 35mm in a 4:3 aspect ratio best supported my narrative.
⠀
“The Birth of a Beautiful Butch” is a story about Alex, a gay high school senior, caught between who she is and what she’s supposed to be. On the day of her school pictures, Alex feels stuck with an appearance that doesn't fit right with her body, but when she retreats into her mind, she is able to imagine the person she wants to be. Ultimately, she transcends the judgement of others through fashion in an authentic expression of herself.
⠀
I made this film because there is so little representation of butch identity in mainstream media, let alone butch fashion. Most people are afraid to even use that word, “butch,” so I wanted to create a narrative that celebrates that identity. This film is for all the kids who were given dresses and other typically feminine clothes, but instead took their brothers’ hand-me-downs and never looked back."

"I have had the privilege of shooting 35mm and 16mm colour negative during my career but this was my first time shooting black and white. Having converted colour stock to black and white in post previously, shooting 5222 by comparison was a more satisfying experience. I really enjoyed the contrast, texture and using coloured filters to bring out different tonal relationships.
⠀
This project was inspired by my personal relationship with my dog Otis, who stars in the film, and my solo travels around outback Australia. I wanted this film to be both visceral and stark through the contrast of detailed emotional closeups and the expanse of the surrounding landscape. This film is ultimately a poem about the loneliness of loss and how it can haunt you no matter how far you try to run away."

PAWS tells the story of a women’s lone encounter with road kill and how it conjures up memories of her late dog. A huge thank you to the entire team on this film- especially exec prod. @producedbygem and dir @giarayne This powerful film deals with topics surrounding the Black experience in the American education system. Our story is a horror film that focuses on the nuanced similarities between the education and prison systems and how the public school system often works symbiotically to groom children for the prison system (the school to prison pipeline)

It's always a magical time on any @producedbygem set, but this last one took the cake. Between my duties as UPM I captured some BTS of the magic for Pens & Pencils.

Gem! Wow, you did it! I've seen the late nights n early mornings. I know how much u poured into writing this groundbreaking story n bringing it to life as a producer. I told u, this one's the one. Proud isn't even the word.

@giarayne you have a way with talent I haven't seen before. So appreciative for the lens you brought to tell this story. Also, I'm sure everyone will agree, thank you for bringing Pippin to set lol. This shoot had its challenges but you pushed thru and got it done. Excited to see what's next!

@cityboyjr!! Wow, it's like you've got lightning in a bottle. Not only blown away by your talent as an actor, but as a musician as well. Congrats on the drop today! Honestly ur just a pleasure to be around. I have so many photos of u n everyone surrounded by u smiling and laughing. You have such a gift!

@heyitsdoree first off... sheesh! So many times throughout this shoot I was in awe of your capabilities. The talent is unmatched, the vibe is unmatched. Like I said, you really are an artist, and all those things on your list are already in motion on the way.

@jackavelithedon I just have to say, you have one of the most positive attitudes! Stuck with one eye closed all day and still smiling and being goofy. I hope we get the chance to work together again, cuz just one day on set wasn't enough.

@ashfordjt My boy! Aye, it never gets old working with you. You are always down to support me and Gem in so many different ways and I'm so grateful our paths collide. You're so talented with such a great heart. It's funny how it all works out lol.

@mikhaelazaba yo! You did your thing! At one point we had 50 background you had to dress! Thank you for showing up in ways you didn't have to. And thank you @kymanicurtis for the laughs and all the hard work you put in.

@mboni_mau last but not least, this world would not be possible without you're amazing production design! You killed it and it was an honor to witness!

To the rest of the cast, crew and our amazing background, THANK YOU!!!

As we continue with post-production, with each new cut, I am so thankful for all the hard work that went into this shoot. Thank you to all my wonderful friends who helped out on this project. In the meantime, please enjoy more BTS of our lovely, attractive, hardworking crew!

Our Gofundme is still active! If you would like to continue to support this project, please visit the link in my bio.
