SHAPEABLE YARN 04 by Panorama Fabrics

We participated with a materials study at the seetech exhibition as part of currents.

Introducing seetech:
A new joint label from the labs at Weißensee School of Art and Design in Berlin.

In our yarn study “Shapeable Yarns”, we explores the theme of simplicity rather than complexity in the field of interior textiles.

Our vision is to manufacture complex products in a resource-efficient manner using monomaterials instead of composite materials that are difficult to recycle. To this end, Panorama Fabrics is developing a range of yarns suitable for industrial production. The special feature of “Shapeable Yarn 04” from the ongoing study is that it can be both form-stable and soft at the same time. In this way, a multifunctional textile architecture can be created which, depending on the product, constantly reinvents itself through varying degrees of firmness, knitted constructions and designs.

SOFT GRID / Nick Geipel

Soft Grid is a textile low-voltage power system that frees electrical infrastructure from within the wall and brings it into the room as a flexible layer. A conductive textile strap carries energy through the space while becoming a design element itself. Ceramic mounts allow it to be routed freely, while clip-on USB-V adapters replace fixed outlets. Direct interaction with the strap controls products such as lights and speakers, creating an open, adaptable system that connects power, use and spatial design.

For years, the labs at the Weißensee Academy of Art Berlin have been producing work that extends beyond the academy: as a source of inspiration, a technological foundation, and a starting point for products and research projects. With the exhibition Seetech, the academy is showcasing these origins for the first time. The exhibition brings together exemplary works from three key labs—the Rapid Prototyping Lab, the Soft Rapid Prototyping Lab, and the eLAB.

Last year, we brought the first edition of Nukleus to life.

Here’s a glimpse behind the scenes. Because behind every experience, every conversation, and every moment shared, there’s a team of people making it happen.

A special thanks to everyone who helped shape it.

The Layers bench system reflects a key facet of reimagining public space beyond commonplace hostile architecture

In the video, Nick Geipel demonstrates the modular beams' effortless disassembly and reconfiguration for inclusive sitting, perching, or lounging.

Crafted from surplus concrete and secured with metal clips, the system – by @gickneipel – eliminates hazardous glues and drilling dust — protecting workers' health and enabling clean circular recovery.

Geipel’s circular approach to design supports easy repair and material repurposing, while caring for people, workers, and the planet.

“How many layers go into sustainability?,” designer Nick Geipel asked himself. He then proposed a practical, holistic answer.

@gickneipel designed the Layers bench system – integrating human-centered design, flexibility, adaptability, worker safety, and material repurposing.

Geipel first addresses ‘defensive design’ and ‘hostile architecture,’two practices he argues are common in cities globally. First, the Layers bench system embraces human-centered urban planning to foster inclusive social spaces — letting users sit, perch, lounge, or even work atop its two-layered wooden beam surface.

Second, the bench’s modular design ensures full disassembly into components for repairs or reentry into production cycles. The bench’s compact, lightweight parts also help to reduce CO2 emissions from shipping.

Third, Geipel also prioritizes worker well-being: two people can safely lift and position the blocks without back or hand strain. A system of metal clips eliminates hazardous glues and drilling dust, which are harmful to workers when assembling furniture.

Finally, the benches use surplus concrete from industrial pours, transforming waste into a valuable resource.

The Layers bench system reminds us that lasting impact is multi-faceted, taking into account materials, human dignity, worker well-being, and circular lifecycles.

How about you – what layers of sustainability are you exploring as a designer, maker or entrepreneur? Share with us in the comments.

nukleus presenting:

metric
@gickneipel

When I was young one of my greatest joys at the
dinner table was playing with candle wax
creating new architectural landscapes until my
parents made me stop and clean up. As we
grow old, this kind of joy and fun is not expres-
sed anymore.
Metric aims to respark that joy of playing with
candles and creating different layers on a
cleaner, more sophisticated level. Metric has a
simple shape but is intelligent and fun in it‘s
functionality. Metric units connect to each other
with ease, creating different heights and layers
to present your favourite candle. If there is a
need for more candles you simply disconnect
one unit and twist the new candle into the tube
where a secure fit is ensured by twisting the
candle into the thread. The units themselves
come in a stainless steel raw, matte or
polished finish.

-Re:start-

demonstrates how design can contribute to addressing the climate crisis by offering new perspectives on energy, resources, mobility, inclusion, and consumption. It focuses on forward-looking materials, circular processes, and resilient design concepts adapted to changing living conditions.
Additionally, media art works reflect on the emotional and societal impacts of climate-related changes.
Happy to be part of this inspiring group of exhibitors.
