I learned this morning of the death of my beloved graduate school professor Barbara Galucci. We hadn’t kept in touch and I had not seen her or her work in years but had I not met her and taken her class, I wouldn’t be a sculptor.
She taught at SMFA for over 20 years, so I am certain I am not alone in mourning the loss of this great teacher and artist.
Her work was brilliant, her criticism was biting, and her respect was everything.
She will be missed.

Lots of heads nodding in agreement and notes being taken during @autonomouscreative ‘s talk on “flow” yesterday at @pearlsteingallery. Some great conversation, art, and giggles in the gallery afterwards, and I got to meet local cartoonist @svaillocomx grad @xbelleandwhistle !
If you haven’t been to see this show yet, you really need to check it out—it’s open until December 14.

SP/N Gallery presents the HORROR
An exhibition exploring the cultural phenomena of horror.
Exhibition includes painting, sculpture, video, new media, and a special film screening.

Exhibition: October 11 – November 16, 2024
Reception Friday, October 11, 6:30-8:30 pm
Film screening: Thursday November 7, 7:20pm

What is it about things that go bump in the night that we find so fascinating? Why do people flock to haunted houses and horror movies? From ancient tales of ghosts and demons to Hollywood franchises and creepypasta creations, horror provides an endless wellspring of ways to explore our own mortality and interpret events – both humanmade and unexplainable – that exist outside the norm of rational thought and behavior. In this increasingly unhinged world, horror is often the only way to think through apocalyptic anxieties around a host of issues, such as politics, the environment, generational trauma, body dysmorphia, aging, and, most importantly, death. This fall, the SP/N Gallery presents “The Horror,” an exhibition featuring artists who use the horror genre to disturbing, mystical, romantic and comic effects.

Photo dump: painting the town black with @anujink
First stop @thespitehaus for @lydia__ricci opening, cool miniature worlds of everyday absurdism.
Talked horror movies and art education (the same thing?? #topical) with @jheimerillustration and @mister_caitlin.
Next stop, @partnersandson for @fictopicto’s double book release. As planned we arrived late enough to miss the big crowd and were able to hang out and chat with the man of the evening and others.
Great to catch up with @dreamygutss and put a face to the remarkable @mechanicalpencilgirl, who wowed everyone by showing up with a set of Jim Jones trading cards that Charles and just about every other big name of the late 80s underground comics scene contributed to.
Last stop, drinks wings and lollipops at @tmoms, where the first photo in this series was taken by @tommyrudmose
