Gotta love a field trip, especially when it takes me to Greektown Chicago AND National Hellenic Museum! Checked out the new exhibit, ‘The Odyssey Reimagined’. Through painting, photography, textiles, sculpture, and sound, 17 contemporary artists interpret Homer’s epic poem. Through these works, we revisit the past to inform our present and future. What a genius Homer was… he continues to inspire us and create dialogue thousands of years later! Don’t miss it. Runs through January 2028. | #nationalhellenic #greektownchicago #greeks #theodyssey #chicagomuseum

August 2026. ☀️🥵

It’s just too dang hot today, & suddenly this picture from August 28, 2019 came back to me.

I had retired only a few months earlier after working most of my life. Somewhere around that time, Somewhere around that time, I found the women of Womins Fest. After so many years of work, marriage, family & responsibility, this was one of the first times I remember feeling completely free to simply be me.

I was becoming authentic again.

One day somebody said, “Come on the hike. It’ll be easy. You’ll love it.” 😂

I knew from the first rocky hill that I might be in trouble. I got farther & farther behind while everybody else happily explored the woods. It really was beautiful, but eventually this woman in the big black hat was DONE. 😂

I sat down, sweating profusely, although somehow this picture doesn’t show it. I believe my friend Kelly snapped this photo while making sure I was okay.

Eventually I convinced her to go on without me. I promised I’d make my way back. And I did—slowly! By the time I arrived, everybody else was already there & seemed delighted to discover I was still alive. 😂

But what I remember most isn’t the heat or that hill.

I remember the women.

I had spent so much of my adult life working that I hadn’t made many women friends. I love my husband & my family, but I was discovering something else I needed, too: women friends. Women are fun.

These women welcomed me. They taught me something about friendship, movement, laughter, joy & simply showing up as yourself.

Seven years later, on another ridiculously hot day, this picture made me smile.

Still here. Still becoming. Still authentic. & still saying—𝙞𝙩’𝙨 𝙟𝙪𝙨𝙩 𝙩𝙤𝙤 𝙙𝙖𝙣𝙜 𝙝𝙤𝙩! ☀️🥵😂

“On the Count” by Gina Robbins speaks of incredible pain and loss on all sides of imprisonment. The pain of victims, loss of human potential, hurting family and the big business of criminal justice. Awarded Best Abstract Art at the San Angelo 26th Ceramics Biennial, handsize wedges are pierced with 1,000 piercings so each figure represents 1,000 prisoners. Used uniforms form a bed for the chains of prisoners and relate the problem to an individual. A film explains the passion behind the project and how Gina installs chains spelling out words such as Care, Liberty and Freedom. The work begs the question of how as a society can we reduce people committing crimes. Artist activist, Roberto Lugo preaches the value of creative activity in combatting hopelessness, poverty and despair.
