Community Energy in Glasgow! ☀️

Last month I visited @glasgowcommunity’s solar project at Ashton Secondary School. The solar PV panels that they’ve installed on the roof produce clean energy which results in lower bills for the school and saves tonnes of Co2.

This is exactly the sort of project that this Labour Government is looking to emulate across the country with our Local Power Plan. Community energy is about putting power in the hands of local people. Providing communities with the financial support and capacity to own energy projects themselves and keep the wealth generated locally. GB Energy has already provided millions of pounds of funding to projects across Scotland, from wind generation in Aberdeenshire to solar panels for the Emmaus homeless shelter in Glasgow.

A massive thank you to LCEF for arranging the visit, and to Glasgow Community Energy and Ashton Secondary School for hosting and showing us the great work that has been done.

“Our Changeprint can be measured by the total savings in carbon emissions and by the value and successes of all the different local projects funded and groups supported by Glasgow Community Energy.”
— Glasgow Community Energy Partnership

Here, impact shows up in many forms at once: emissions cut, local projects backed, and community groups given the support they need to succeed. It’s climate action that strengthens local capacity and keeps value rooted where it matters most.

👉 Glasgow Community Energy's Changeprint is about far more than carbon savings. Learn more about the impact that you can make when you join with others in your area. Discover Changeprint: carboncopy.eco/changeprint

Please join us for ‘Power Station’ - an inspiring and uplifting new film about how we can turn our homes and our streets into renewable power stations. We will be joined by Hilary Powell, one of the film's stars and co-director for an online Q&A.

This will be screened alongside some short films featuring Glasgow Community Energy, our local community-owned renewable energy co-operative.

‘Power Station’ is about two artists in Walthamstow who set out to take their street off the grid, kickstarting a solar-powered energy revolution.

Inspired by lockdown mutual aid initiatives, artist-activists Hilary Powell and Dan Edelstyn decided to turn their street into an energy-generating powerhouse – a prototype for a new way of living, with the hope of kickstarting a wider push towards sustainable alternatives.

Directed by the duo, ‘Power Station’ charts their turbulent journey, from pitching the idea to their neighbours and sleeping on the roof of their home, to raising finance and launching a bid for a Christmas number one single.

By turns funny and heartwarming, Powell and Edelstyn’s film is a vibrant portrait of their local neighbourhood, and a charming testament to the power of art and community in changing minds about what could be possible for a better future for everyone.

We’ll have teas, coffees and vegan food available along with time for discussion after the film. Everyone is very welcome! This event is organised by Glasgow School of Art, Glasgow Community Energy, Friends of the Earth Scotland, Unison Glasgow and Extinction Rebellion Glasgow. @glasgowcommunity energy co-operative is proving that local action can drive real change towards a climate ready Scotland.

Developed by dedicated volunteers, this initiative installed solar panels on two local schools in 2020. This project continues to save nearly 50 tonnes of CO₂ every year.

Even more inspiring? The electricity generated is sold to raise funds for local community projects.

With members including individuals and community organisations, this co-op shows how working together can help tackle the climate crisis and empower communities.

Round of applause for this inspiring group: local, inclusive, and future-focused.

If you’d like to learn how you can help your community get climate ready, use this Scotland’s Climate Week as a chance to get in touch with your local Climate Action Hub. They can help you access funding, workshops and more.
