We lost a dear family member today. I first met Taka because he had created a famous Shaka topiary bush in his front yard and I was making a film on the Shaka gesture. Turns out he learned the art form in Milan after WWII. And I soon learned that he was one of 6 remaining 100th Infantry Battalion veterans still alive. In fact, he was the one 100th veteran who showed up publicly at events for 80+ years, so as we created a film on the 100th, we became friends and family together. I learned that he was one of the greatest in the Greatest Generation. They were truly spirits of amazing valor and heroism. Taka is my hero. He lived an amazing life of contribution, giving and legacy. He will not be forgotten and his memory will surely serve as an exemplary for generations to come. God speed Taka and thank you for sharing your life with us. ❤️ 🙏 🤙

We came for the meatballs and a “special meeting”… then somehow there was cake and whiskey! 🥃🎂😂 Now that’s how you send someone into retirement!

Mahalo to my incredible id8 Ohana for the surprise celebration as I close the chapter on 31 years of service to the State of Hawaiʻi. I truly wasn’t expecting it, and my heart is so full. Thank you for the love, the laughs, the friendship, and for making this milestone one I’ll never forget.

If retirement starts with cake, whiskey, and all of you… I’d say I’m off to a pretty great beginning! 🌺❤️
