Thank you, @gmanchess, for an inspiring morning!

Last Friday Greg opened his sold-out weekend workshop by showing how a strong picture is planned before the first brushstroke, with composition, value, and picture design working together so a painting grabs the viewer rather than simply describing a scene.

We're grateful to the artists who joined us for the lecture and demo, and to the workshop students who carried those ideas through the weekend.

Swipe through for moments from the morning.

Enriching lives through the power of art and community.

From paintbrush to page, the Headless Horseman comes to life with Greg Manchess’ artistry!

Greg created twelve original full-color illustrations exclusively for Fablelistik Editions’ THE LEGEND OF SLEEPY HOLLOW, including this striking depiction of the Horseman’s infamous pumpkin.

Each painting was created by hand, then carefully reproduced to retain the richness, texture, and movement of Manchess’s original work.

You’ll find this illustration in the Collector’s, Numbered, and Lettered Editions, with the Lettered Edition limited to just 26 copies, A–Z, and never to be reprinted.

The Collector’s Edition is shipping now, while the Numbered and Lettered Editions are available for pre-order.

25 years. Never forgotten. 🕊️

This piece is my tribute to the 343 firefighters who gave their lives running toward the Twin Towers to save others.

I was eight years old on September 11, 2001, and I still remember that day, and the days that followed, with a clarity that feels impossible all these years later. I remember the sky. I remember the silence. I remember how everything changed.

I recently had the privilege of witnessing the @soi128 ’ 25th-anniversary program honoring their original The Prevailing Human Spirit exhibition, created in the aftermath of 9/11. Seeing those works again—and being reminded of how artists came together through grief to create something rooted in solidarity, healing, and hope, felt incredibly meaningful.

For years, I wondered whether I should make art about 9/11 and how I could possibly honor those who gave their lives. I wanted to finish this piece on 9/11, but burnout is real. I decided not to rush it. Some things deserve time.

The firefighter resting on his ax is what stayed with me.
I surrounded him in the darkness and ash, as the weight of everything around him has him pause. However the story continues on, for the firefighters and first responders there, exhausted and overwhelmed with pain and fear and grief, still got back up.

Moments of rest matter.

We get knocked down. We become exhausted. We pause. And then we rise again.

But Never Forget should never mean spreading hatred, misinformation, fear, or bigotry toward an entire community. We can remember without hating. We can grieve without becoming cruel.

Love needs to win. Not hate.

This is for the 343, the brave Firefighters who never made it home, their families, the survivors, and everyone whose lives were forever changed.

May we remember.
May we rest.
May we rise.

Toward the skies, with love. 🕊️

What are you doing this Friday? I will be here, at The Society of Illustrators.💛

••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

The Prevailing Human Spirit: Art and Advocacy in the Wake of 9/11 marks the 25th anniversary of September 11 with a reflective event honoring the Society of Illustrators’ 2001 exhibition and the extraordinary collective response it inspired. Conceived in a moment of profound loss and uncertainty, The Prevailing Human Spirit became a space for grief, solidarity, and action, demonstrating how art can serve as advocacy, healing, and connection.

Through a moderated panel conversation with Greg Manchess, Guy Billout, Peter De Sève, William Low, and Terry Brown, the executive director of the Society of Illustrators at the time, organizers closely involved in the original exhibition, Wendy Popp and Rudy Gutierrez, will explore how creative voices helped shape a shared response that brought communities together in New York City and beyond.

The evening will begin at 6:15pm with a special slide presentation featuring artwork curated from the original exhibition. It will also include a small pop-up exhibition featuring original artwork by the panelists and others, as well as prints and artifacts from the original project, including the book created to commemorate its tenth anniversary. The program will conclude with a special moment in part song and part meditative chant led by DK Dyson, offered in place of the traditional moment of silence.

Book 6 for August!

The Vengeful Virgin by Gil Brewer
Cover art by @gmanchess
Available from @therealhardcasecrime

I decided on yet another HCC novel. This publisher has yet to disappoint me as far as their diverse catalog of dime-store capers!

It's a nice, chill night, so I'm pairing this with a nice brewski I've come to love:
@athleticbrewing Lite Lime & Salt!

The Criterion Collection just released their upcoming releases for November 2026! The one I’m most excited for here is definitely KPop Demon Hunters, and the design for it is incredible! I’m excited to check out all of these new releases in November!

The Criterion Collection, Inc. (or simply Criterion) is an American home entertainment distribution company that focuses on licensing, restoring, and distributing “important classic and contemporary films”. A “sister company” of arthouse film distributor Janus Films, Criterion serves film and media scholars, cinephiles, and public and academic libraries. Criterion has helped to standardize certain aspects of home-video releases such as film restoration, the letterboxing format for widescreen films, and the inclusion of bonus features such as scholarly essays and documentary content about the films and filmmakers. Criterion most notably pioneered the use of commentary tracks. Criterion has produced and distributed more than 1,500 special editions of its films in VHS, Betamax, LaserDisc, DVD, Blu-ray, and Ultra HD Blu-ray formats and box sets. The Criterion Collection includes titles by some 600 directors from more than 50 countries. Many of these films and their special features are also available via the Criterion Channel, an online streaming service the company has operated since April of 2019.
