The secret to running fast in HYROX?

It’s really hard to run fast when your legs don’t want to. 🔥

HYROX running isn’t just about having a fast 1 km time when you’re fresh. You need to be able to repeat that effort over and over again while carrying fatigue from every station before it.

That’s where compromised running becomes so important.

You need to teach your body how to run when:
→ Your heart rate is already elevated
→ Your legs are loaded with fatigue
→ Lactate levels are high
→ You’ve just finished a demanding station
→ You still have 7 more runs to go

This is why I believe HYROX athletes need a combination of Zone 2, VO₂ max work, threshold training and compromised running.

Zone 2 builds the aerobic engine and improves your ability to recover and keep producing energy efficiently.

VO₂ max work raises your ceiling - giving you a bigger aerobic capacity to work from.

Threshold training teaches you to sustain a high percentage of that capacity for longer.

But then you need to take it one step further.

You need to teach your body to produce repeated threshold efforts.

Run → station → run → station → run.

Over and over again.

The goal is to make your body more comfortable operating under pressure and, more importantly, to reduce the drop-off in performance as fatigue builds.

Because in HYROX, you don't need to be the athlete who can run the fastest 1 km.

You want to be the athlete who can run fast enough… eight times.

Build the engine. Build the threshold. Build the ability to repeat it.

That’s how you turn running fitness into HYROX running fitness. 🏃‍♂️🔥

Measure your progress from where you used to be, not from where anyone else is.

Keep going.

The early mornings. The hard sessions. The running. The strength work. The days where you question whether you're actually getting better.

And then race day comes.

Your heart rate is through the roof.
Your lungs are burning.
Your legs are screaming.
Your brain is telling you to slow down.

But somewhere in all of that, don’t forget to look around and take it in.

Don’t get so caught up in “I’m not running fast enough”, “I should be doing better”, or “I’m dying” that you forget what’s actually happening.

You’re racing.
You’re testing yourself.
You’re surrounded by people pushing their limits.

And you’re finally getting to experience the result of all those hours of training.

Yes, put it all on the line.
Yes, push your body as hard as it can go.
Yes, embrace the discomfort.

But enjoy it.

Because sometimes the body performs exactly how you wanted it to. Sometimes it doesn’t. Sometimes you hit your goal, sometimes you learn a hard lesson.

Either way, the race is a learning experience.
So take the adrenaline in. Feel the atmosphere. Enjoy the hype. Embrace the pain. Smile when you can.

You worked too hard to spend the entire race doubting yourself.

Race hard. Race smart.

But most importantly…
Be present enough to enjoy the moment you worked so hard to create.

That’s why I believe racing throughout the year is such an important part of training.

Build for 8–12 weeks.

➡️ Race.
➡️ Test what improved.
➡️ Identify your weaknesses.
➡️ Go back to the drawing board.
➡️ Build again.

Every race gives you data.

Maybe your running improved but your carries still broke you. Maybe your engine was strong but your legs lacked strength endurance.

Maybe your pacing was spot on - or maybe you went out too hard and paid for it later.

That’s the value of racing.

You’re not just chasing a finish time — you’re testing the athlete you’ve built.

Then you use that information to build the next version of yourself. 🔥

Train. Test. Adjust. Repeat.

Still taking it all in. 🖤

@deadlydozenafrica was more than just a race. It was a reminder of why we put in the work day after day - the early mornings, the hard sessions, the days when you don't feel like training, and all the sacrifices that nobody sees.

Then you get an opportunity like this… to stand on a start line, race alongside the person you love, and finally showcase all those hours of training. That’s what I love most about fitness and endurance racing. The work you put in during training eventually gives you a moment where you get to see what you're capable of.

Coming 2nd in Mixed Doubles at Deadly Dozen is something I'll always be proud of, but the experience itself means even more. The people, the energy, the community, the competition and the memories made along the way - that's what makes this sport so special.

A massive thank you to Deadly Dozen for creating an incredible event and giving us the opportunity to experience something we'll never forget. And thank you to the entire fitness and endurance community for continuing to push, inspire and motivate each other. 🫶🏼

And to my fiancée, my teammate and my best friend , thank you for doing life with me. For training with me, racing with me, pushing me, supporting me and sharing every high and low along the way. There is no one I'd rather stand on a start line with. 🖤

So grateful for this journey, for the people we've met, for the memories we're creating and for the life we're building together.

And of course, thank you @gml.labs for being part of the journey and supporting us on race day, and capturing every moment 🙏💪🫡

The training is the journey.

The race is the opportunity to showcase it.

But doing it together is what makes it all worth it. ❤️‍🔥
