Student life at PSU is both active and inclusive. The campus has 13 identity based centers for students to find representation and support. Given its location, the city of Portland is its campus. Students can live on campus, but many find off campus housing. They only require first year students coming from a certain distance to live on campus. The prices are very affordable given its location. Students don’t really need cars as the campus is very walkable and students can also use city bus and light rail. The Portland public transit system is a safe and viable option for students. They can also gain access to free bike rentals. There are several bike shops on campus. Admissions wise, they are on the Common App. Their deadline for Honors College consideration is January 1. The total cost is over $50,000 a year. Non-resident out of state students can benefit from scholarships of up to $6,000. This does not include FAFSA. Most of their students come from Western states as they qualify for the WUE (Western University Exchange) program. Athletically, they are Division 1 for sports, the Vikings, playing in the Big Sky Conference.

What a great visit to Portland State University, a large, urban, research university located in the heart of Portland in the University District. They enroll nearly 20,000 students each year. About half come directly out of high school, and the other half come from Community Colleges in Oregon or other states. They are the most diverse public university in Portland with nearly half of their student body identifying as a student of color. They also have nearly half of their student body identifying as first generation students. They are an Emerging Hispanic Serving Institution, an Asian Pacific Islaner Institution as well as a First Gen Forward school. They are top 10 in the country for LGBTQ+ inclusivity. Academically, they offer 87 majors and several other minors/certificates. They are most well known for their Graphic Design program which is among the top in the country. A Portland State alum created the Nike Logo. They also have a strong Architecture program. It does not require a portfolio at the time of admission, but during Sophomore year, students will complete a portfolio to enter the Professional Track which is selective. A PSU alum was recently a lead in the PDXAirport remodel/addition. Given their location in an urban city, their Business School and HealthSciences are very popular as well. Lots of internship opportunities. Top employers includeAdidas, Apple, Google, Nike, Providence Health, and Kaiser Permanente. Their most popular major is Psychology and they also have a phenomenal social work program.
