Go teaches us that you never truly feel ready, you just have to start somewhere… Rather than start modestly, Go took a risk and reached out to what he considered to be the top gallery on the Gold Coast: 19 Karen Contemporary Artspace. Terri Lew, who represents artists from Australia and around the world, was open to this artist who had just recently looked up, “How to be an artist?” Go laughs when he thinks of Terri. “She is so awesome, because she doesn’t sugarcoat anything. She told me, ‘Bring your work in. I’ll take a look. But don’t get your hopes up.’ She took me on. And I thought, yes, I made it.” Find out more about Go’s story at the link in our bio or head straight to goldcoaster.com.au 🖼️ CREDITS Firme Agency Director / Creative Director: Rob Garwood @robhufnagel Director of Photography: Nathan Prostamo @nathanprostamo 1st AC / Sound Recordist: Brad Colman @bradley_colman Grip / Gaffer: Matt Cox @mattcoxmc Producer: Jacinta Crane @jacintacrane Editor: Georgia Mackay @gmac.edits Colour: Rafaim @rafaim_ Sound: Rob Rivers @robriv3rs Brand Gold Coast Creative team: Simon Wise & Madeleine Lefebvre @siwise @0kmadds #goldcoaster #artist #localartist #goldcoastartist

Go Suga came back to the Gold Coast at nineteen with no finished schooling, no plan, and a sense he’d failed at the place once already. His father told him to look into something to do with art. He went to TAFE, missed the enrolment cutoff, and didn’t know what a portfolio was. The teachers walked him through it anyway, after hours. He’s gone on to become one of Australia’s leading pop artists, with solo shows on New York and Berlin behind him. #goldcoaster #goldcoastartist #popart

During our conversations with Go, we asked how he felt about these paddles becoming worn through use. His answer perfectly captured something we both believe. Not objects to protect. Objects to live with.

Good objects are made one decision at a time. Birch plywood for strength and a beautifully smooth print finish. Locally sourced walnut for warmth in the hand. A single smoked oak inlay to subtly tie everything together. Small details. Big difference.

One of the unexpected outcomes of Show Yourself has been watching emerging and practising artists discover that uncertainty isn’t evidence of failure, it’s evidence that they’re making work that is authentic and actually matters. The reflections quoted here are not mine. They are theirs, straight off the back of our last session with @19karengallery represented artist Go Suga @go_suga They speak of honest conversations, industry knowledge, creative doubt, generosity, business realities and the quiet relief of discovering that no artist, regardless of experience, is immune to uncertainty. Perhaps this is what community is actually for? Not networking. Not connections or validation. Real people and real conversations. A place where art is taken seriously enough to be spoken about honestly and envisioned excitedly. If you’re joining us at the exhibition, you’re not simply coming to view finished works. You’re stepping into the conversations, questions and creative courage that shaped them. And if you’re an artist watching from the sidelines, wondering whether the next cohort is worth it, perhaps the most important question isn’t whether you’re ready. It’s whether you’re willing to stop grappling for certainty in your own and making your art in isolation. Friday August 7th, 5–7pm 🎟 Tickets via the link in bio. Show Yourself opens in just over 3 weeks! Enquiries for the next Show Yourself cohort are now open or come to the exhibition and experience the magic that we are creating together for yourself. #emergingartists #art #curators #goldcoastartist #artcollector

GOOD OBJECTS GET USED. It took us a little longer than we’d hoped to get these over the line. Turns out getting the off-white beach tennis balls just right is surprisingly difficult. Who knew? But they’re finally here. Our second annual Beach Paddle Edition features artwork by Australian-Japanese artist Go Suga. Handcrafted in the French Alps from birch plywood and walnut. Made to hang on the wall. Made to leave the house. Made for long days outside. Sun. Salt. Sand. Because the best objects collect stories. Only 50 sets have been made. Available now. #ArtOfPingPong #GoSuga #BeachPaddles #FunctionalArt #DesignObjects
