Last weekend in Sault Ste. Marie Ontario was my 9th 🇨🇦 Marathon National champs, and 8th time grabbing a medal, this time the 🥉. It was a rad weekend hanging out with @golindsgo & @evanolauson as we checked out a new riding zone near the Great Lakes. The 30 km course was awesome, 28 of it was flowing singletrack over a flattish but rolling course which added up to 90 km and 2000 vm over the 3 lap race. The @saultcyclingclub has sure done an amazing job in both trail construction and at hosting there first National champs. Race wise @andrewlespy took control from the start, my tactic was to go full diesel and pick off riders as they hopefully blew up off his wheel. It worked pretty good, picking off riders and closing in on 3rd mid race. This course was relentless with constant cornering and few spots to really open it up. There was one grassy double track section for a km, with 3rd in the scopes I tried to power through the section but clipped a pedal and went head first into the ground at 30 km/hr. It was a horrifying sound as my @lazermtb helmet crumpled, as its built to, dispersing the heavy impact. It was a big old hockey hit, dizzy, stumbling to try and get up, I’d fix the handlebar then tried to ride to the feed zone to reassess. The big hit must’ve kick started the adrenaline as I’d ride a good rush for a half hour, closing a few minute gap to 3rd, putting in a cushion to secure the last podium spot, then set it in cruise control to get the aching body to the line in one piece. All I can say is that my new @lazersportna helmet sure did its job and I was lucky to ride away from that one 🪖. Huge shout out to @evanolauson for the amazing feedzone support as he rode over 30km between feedzones throughout the race to feed both Lindsay and I myseld without missing a beat 🫡. Big shut out to @saultcyclingclub & @cyclingcanadaofficial for the great event and the airport pickup and drop offs as well as @huizingagerrit & @straightupcycles for the bike work before the race 🔧! XCM Nationals Recap 🇨🇦 This one was a bit of a roller coaster… was initially prepping myself for a disappointing DNS on Saturday due to a brutal stomach bug that hit me Friday following a week of sickness. Somehow woke up on race day feeling decent and made it to the start line of the Elite race amongst a stacked list of inspiring women. Settled into my own tempo from the gun and leaned hard on @nnfuel Race Day mix, the only thing that was settling in my stomach, to keep me moving through 100km of incredible Hiawatha Highlands singletrack. Far from my highest power numbers but up there for one of the most physically and mentally demanding races I’ve ever done given the circumstances. Cherry on top was travelling and hanging out with an awesome Guelph crew and watching @reid_out_doors crush his O-Cup race on Sunday! 📷 1,2: @nickiwanyshyn

It’s always exciting to have the opportunity to line up & battle for the Maple Leaf 🍁. Flying into Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario for the Canadian Marathon champs will mark my 9th chance at the Jersey. 2 x 🥇 4 x 🥈 1 x 🥉 1 x 8th or 9th So far its been a solid trip, the rolling trails are a blast, the organizers have looked after us well and hanging with a couple more westerners (@golindsgo & @evanolauson ) has been great. I’ve tried a few times to hold both the Canadian xcm title and World 24hr title at the same time but it never lined up. Tomorrow’s another opportunity. I won’t be the favourite, but riding some good fitness after the last altitude block in Colorado, i’ll be there with guns a blazing. The distance is right being equal to about 3 BCBike race or Transrockies stages lined up in a row 👌 Looking forward to the 99km battle tomorrow across the Canadian Shield, then heading back south for another blitz of high altitude Colorado racing ✌️. Some days you are the bowling ball, today i was the pin. The start line for Stage 1 of Fernie ST3 was excessively hopped up (maybe the cool weather?) and not even 30 sec into my race two yahoos next to me crossed bars and took me out 🎳. They rode off after using me as an air bag but I didn’t fare as well. I did jump up (to not get further hurt by another 500 racers riding over me) and when the tail of the race passed I was able to hobble to the start and the medics. Amazingly it’s just flesh wounds for me. I’m feel so lucky for that! My bike had some odd collaterals - like my saddle broken in 3 places, but likewise is fine. The medic team, the start crew, the race director, the media team, my friends, racers who just saw the carnage, they all made things work out for me and then gave me hugs. The thing about this crash was it was completely unnecessary. As a racer it is your responsibility to understand the course, the situation, and adjust accordingly. Often I have the fitness to blaze ahead but there is a safety reason to pause. I know the race will open up or the terrain will become favorable and I can move forward. Learning to race with your head first and legs second is a sign of a real competitor. I hope the field cools their jets a bit for stage 2. 🤞🏽my knee feels up to pedaling tomorrow. 📸 @gibbymtbphoto start line pals 📸 @transrockiesbike magically finding a replacement saddle for me!
