Quick Witt #99: MYTH BUSTED!!! Large civil rights verdicts and/or settlements DO NOT take money from city budgets. Most settlement proceeds are paid by insurance companies that ensure local municipalities. The story of kids' school lunches getting cut or police department budget's being directly affected is just another boogeyman's tale some use to help law enforcement officers avoid accountability for abusing individual civil rights. Don't believe the hype folks. Stay focused.

And the struggle continues...One would hope law enforcement agencies would do the right thing and condemn the killing of Ryan Gainer as clear error or at least a terrible mistake and or mishandling. One would hope the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Dept. would acknowledge a problem that should have been obvious when his deputies shot multiple times at an innocent and unarmed Marquis Jackson because someone heard an acorn drop. However, they have not. In fact, they've doubled down on affirming these actions as appropriate conduct. Not afraid of the fight for justice. Hard truths are encountered regularly in civil rights litigation. The truth is there is bias, dare I say racial bias, in modern policing. How could there not be? To suggest racial bias does not exist suggests that law enforcement is the one agency that is impervious to prejudice and racial bias that exists in everyday society. Let's get real. That's unlikely folks. The sooner we acknowledge the problem we can begin to address it. I sat down with some folks to tell a couple of hard truths recently. Check out the video to catch a part of it.

A lot of people discount the terror that overzealous, grossly negligent, and racist police practices play in the lives of Black folks, especially young Black men. Marquis Jackson was subjected to an episode of target practice as he sat handcuffed in the back of a patrol car having committed no crime. But, the spectre of the hulkish Black hooligan" who can walk through bullets, break free from handcuffs, and fire silenced weapons has been used as justification for this terribly brutal incident. I'm committed to getting answers and justice for him. Who's with me?

Some folks are gonna take issue with my description of the truth. They will argue officers do not shoot to kill, they shoot to stop the threat. Verbal gymnastics and semantics if you ask me. What will the people say? Does continued gunshots at an individual's center body mass imply an intent to kill a person?
