The Cherry Orchard has for a long time my least favorite of the 4 major Chekhov plays (I refuse to count Ivanov) but last night I saw a super scrappy production with a tight yet very faithful hour 45 adaptation that made me truly see how much of a masterpiece this play is.

This was performed by a cast of young actors (many of whom decades a way from playing these roles on the “big stages”) but they were light years better than the more age-appropriate actors I’ve seen in this play in the past. It didn’t feel like a stretch for them to portray the loss over losing one’s childhood memories and basically entire way of life. I think living through a global pandemic and climate crisis (along with our current period of rapidly rising fascism) couldn’t have made it too tricky to mine those emotions.

What I loved most though is that it was so clear that this was just a bunch of friends putting on a play together. Yes this play gets heavy but it’s got some great comedic moments and I loved seeing this ensemble crack each other up. I’m so glad I saw this over something on Broadway or at one of the big non-profits. This is what theatre should be and this is how I always want to make it from now on.

Follow these artists and hire them. It was definitely one of those where i found myself perplexed on the subway over why these humans are not constantly booked. They’ve all certainly been added to my pool of talent to recommend and consider for my projects.

Can’t wait for what they have in store next summer.

This is a play about my worst fears and also Pilates and also Sisterhood and Motherhood and New York City but most importantly Vestavia Hills, Alabama.
