On Saturday, the Houston Futures Festival brought together residents, students, artists and community organizations for a day of learning, connection and celebration across the Greater Third Ward.

From workshops and community resources to live performances, festivalgoers explored ideas that help shape Houston’s future while honoring the neighborhood’s rich history and culture. Thank you to everyone who participated and volunteered!

Are you passionate about education, leadership, and serving Houston students? The Houston Public Education Fellowship prepares Houston leaders to serve as informed trustees, advocates, and advisors for public education.

The fellowship runs November 2026–May 2027 and includes hybrid sessions, in-person networking, and a development stipend.

Building the Future of KIPP Texas!

This week, we officially kicked off our Houston workshop sessions for the KIPP Texas Advantage, our statewide initiative defining what makes a KIPP Texas education unique!! Families, staff, and community members came together to collaborate on shaping our Portrait of a Graduate: the exact tools, academic skills, and character mindsets every Little KIPPster needs to thrive through college, career, and beyond.🎓✨

We're just getting started! We have more sessions scheduled this fall across:

3 years ago when we met, you were moving through college. We were talking about school systems, you impressing me with your desire to teach & pour into Sped. children, & your move to Florida! You were my first intern.

2 years ago, we were talking fraternity life. You became a Kappa!

1 year ago, we were sitting on the patio, eating lunch, talking about how vast the last year was for your growth! You were entering into your career!

Today, we talked: relationships, learning Braille, being a Superintendent, a future Ph.D, cats + Black folks, a fish named Will Smith, & so much more! You are moving up in the world!

We also finally got our first drink together! You even have a mustache now…a WHOLE FACE DECORATION!

Watching you grow from late, mature teenager to grown, actualized man has been nothing short of a joy to me. We keep saying, “Mentor,” but it always feels more like brotherhood.

I love you so much & cannot wait to see you continue flourishing. Seeing you encourages me & assures me that the future is in excellent hands!

Over the past three years, my career has taken me places I only dreamt of in silence. I’m not going to front—working a 9-to-5 and then owning a 6-to-10 can be very trying.

Whether I’m building resumes & securing job placement for students, negotiating contracts & leading walkthroughs, sitting behind the mic or telling my truth in front of it, advocating for mental health, or doubling down on public health—it has all become part of my toolkit, & it hasn’t always been easy.

But this morning, I woke up to Proverbs 18:21: “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” Then I heard a word from @itsannajoy, and I was humbled, grateful, and reflective about the work I get to do.

Somewhere in there, I also had to ask God to forgive me for the times I have complained. Because whether it was needing a new vehicle without the ideal credit score, keeping my lights on when I had a pink slip, moving His hand so that my rent did not increase but my clientele did, or simply making sure my name was mentioned in rooms that would promote my gifts—I’ve never been without.

So, I will not only steward my gifts better, but I’ll also watch my mouth and shift my tongue toward more gratitude and more life.

This summer, 13 undergraduate and graduate students are partnering with four Houston-area nonprofits to turn data and research into action through the Social Economy and Enterprise Academy.

As part of a partnership between the UH Department of Economics and the Hobby School, students from various disciplines are combining coursework with hands-on experience to address challenges related to homeownership, municipal employee wellness, community health and public education reform.
